Shadow Advice

I have Jenn's shadow styles but feel I am not using them to my best advantage - I tend to only use one paper style and don't tweak them. Do you have any advice on how I could use them better to make my layouts seem more of a paper style which is the style I like most

I don't tweak Jenn's styles either, but I do make sure that I use all the different ones. There are ones for flowers, so I use them for flowers, etc...

what aaron said. i also signed up for peppermint granberg's class at big picture. i figure i need to understand it better - even if i'm going to use styles! it was ten bucks. figure you can't go wrong with that.

i use a mix of shadow styles (jenn's is one of them)...but i tweak. a lot. i think you need to find what works for you, and in my case, that's lots of trial and error!

Yeah, I've been thinking about that class, too. I made my own styles a while ago, but like you said, it's only $10 and I'm sure it's worth it.

I don't know if this is a case of filesharing but I bought the Peppermint shadows but I don't seem to be able to make the metadata files. For some reason I can't change the names of the categories. I don't have notepad or something so maybe that's the problem.

As I have the asl files, is there anyone who can send me the xml files by email? Please pm me for my emailaddress.

If this is agains the rules, I am sorry for asking.

I would contact Peppermint.

Go to Peppermints blog and read her mind blowing shadow tutorial. That's the one I used.

Im going to sign up for her class as well. Its only $10! I use her shadow styles as well and then I tweak as needed.

A general rule of thumb is to use shorter shadows for things like papers, etc ... that you want to lay flatter against the background. To give things depth, use larger shadows that have a greater distance and spread. If you want realistic shadows, you absolutely have to vary them within your page. Objects don't all cast the same shadows. Try studying things IRL and see how they cast shadows.

I primarily use Peppermint's Shadows according to the element that I'm using-ie paper style for paper etc. I used to do my own, but decided I would rather save time by using set styles.

I use Jenn's shadows and I do tweak them depending on the situation. And then I use Peppermint's tutorial on some of my shadows (like flowers and ribbons). I also listened to an episode of The Digi Show that Peppermint and Lynette were on about shadowing and I use a few techniques from there. I will say that when I take the time to do my shadows right, I like the look of my page better.

I forgot about Peppermint's class. She said is part her tutorial on her blog but goes into more detail.

i found some shadows that I liked and then I just use them and forget about it! I don't have that much time for endless tweaking. And my family still likes my pages!

I agree. I tend to tweak fewer than 5 shadows per page, just the few things that most need it (like foliage, flowers that aren't hidden behind things, and twisted/folded ribbons or string).

fyi - jenn's styles and peppermint's have the same angle. (aaron told me this on the digi show - thanks aaron) so i've been mixing and matching! peppermint gets into smudging in her videos which i think makes a big difference too!

I still have no xml metadata files for the Peppermint styles. They haven't replied on my email. I know it's weekend so I have to be patient. However, I wonder why they don't just add the metadata files like Jenn did....
