SD Card Resetting

I got a new camera and every time I dump pictures off the card the card numbers "reset". This is annoying to me because I already have a file labeled 001 and then the next download it starts over with 001 2 so then none of my pictures are in chronological order. I'm hope this question makes sense to somebody?! Does anybody know how to fix that? Thanks in advance.

Search your camera menus, I think it's in there. What camera do you have?

There is a setting somewhere that turns that off, something like 'keep numbering' I think. Drove me nuts when I got my D3100 and it kept doing that. I don't have my camera handy right now but I thik it is with the menu item where you tell it whether you want the images to be raw or .jpg or both.

Thanks so much ladies! I just got a Nikon D5200 and am trying to learn how to use it! This card setting is going to drive me insane! Off to look at the menu!
