S/O Lap desk thread--PSA: Is your fan running all the time?

So, I posted the other day about my MBP fan running constantly and the need for better circulation under/around my lappy. But, over the last few days, I've been researching a little more and I isolated a lot of my problem to this lovely program called FinderPop. I have no recollection of installing it, and I have no idea what it's for, but it was hogging CPU resources like crazy. Every time I would go into the Activity Monitor and kill the FP-Injector process (which runs on startup), the fan would calm down and everything would go back to a reasonable level. Quitting that process never affected any of the things I was trying to do. So, I Googled it, and removed FinderPop. Everything is happier now.

So, if you're having problems with your fan running constantly, try looking for and removing FinderPop. To remove it, you go into System Preferences. The FinderPop icon was down on the very bottom in mine. Once you click on the FinderPop icon, click on the Etc. tab and you can uninstall it from there.

Today, I've taken the cookie cooling rack out from under my MBP, and we'll see if the fan stays happy even without extra circulation. Wish me luck!

Hmm. Well, FinderPop is probably just a Mac thing, since Finder is a Mac thing. But, if I were you, I'd check your Activity Monitor (or whatever the equivalent thing is called on a PC) and see what programs are using resources. My fans rev up when I'm in the middle of scrapping. But, they shouldn't be going nuts when I'm just checking email, right?

yeah - didn't find that program! LOL It's not going crazy right now - but I will definitely check my resources and see what's going on! Glad you found a solution!

That's crazy Lydia! I didn't find that program on mine either but my MBP is quiet most of the time. I can pretty much predict when it's going to get loud - I'm either doing something intense in Photoshop (like using the text tool at the end of a layout) or I browse to a website that has a ton of Flash. Safari and Flash don't play nice.

I had a lot of fan problems about 6 mon ago... turned out that there was a ton of dust around the fan compartments - apparently it's common problem due to the design of the kind of Dell I have... another reason to go Mac...

Mine was running constantly - seriously - always. It went clear to 6200 rpms when I started up, and it never stopped until I shut down. It was crazy. It's so much nicer now. And, I'm pretty proud of myself for figuring out what was causing it. :thumbup:

That's awesome you figured it out! Our computer overheats because DH accidentally pulled the fan off of the video card and I'm sure we didn't do a pro job replacing it for proper heat transfer.
