What's your preferred method for disposing of bacon grease and other stuff like that?

Inquiring minds want to know.
 
Growing up, my mom used to always pour it off into this aluminum measuring cup thingie we used to melt butter on the stove. Then, she'd let it harden (or if it was summer time, she'd stick it in the fridge) and scoop it out into the trash.

I did that after moving out and getting married for a few years. But... gosh... it's a pain. And cups of fat sitting around waiting to harden grossed me out. So, long story short, I either put it down the drain with hot water running on the tap for several minutes afterwards or, I place a crumpled paper towel in the trash and slowly pour the grease onto the paper.
 
I put my bacon grease in a mason jar in the fridge and use it to fry eggs :)

Most of the time when I cook ground meat there isn't much extra grease in the pan. If there is, I'll usually let the pan cool and pour or scrape the hardened grease off into the trash - or the dog bowl.
 
Just tonight I put the grease in a juice container that we are throwing out in the recycling bin. (It was barely any grease) If I have a can (from soup or veggies) I put the grease in there. And then throw in the trash. We usually cook turkey so there really isn't any grease with that. So I don't have to deal with it very often.
 
for grease from pans and such- i line a bowl with foil, and pour it in, directly from the pan. after it hardens, i ball up the foil and throw it away. i never put grease down the drain. i did once, in the first apartment i was in. it clogged the drain and the housing people were pissed.

for grease/oil/drippings from my little "george foreman grill"- i have an empty jar that i pour everything into. the grill has a little tray thing for drippings, i pour directly from the tray into the jar. because of the drippings/juice, it never hardens like plain grease does. so the jar keeps it contained, and it has a lid so there's no smell. once the jar gets full, i toss it in the trash.

I like that! I try not to put it down the drain too, but I have to admit I do it with small amounts from time to time. :)

I asked our plumber about this. Since we live in a warm climate, it's really not much of an issue. Plus, it's not like I am cooking bacon or ground beef that often anymore. But, shhh... don't tell my Mom. She would reprimand me. :D

I do like the idea of the foil... but really, the fat never hardens fast enough for me! :p It's liquid even days later sometimes.

lol! Mine's in a mason jar in the fridge too and I use it for um... everything.
As for everything else, we save our big plastic sugar containers and pour the grease in those and store it in the freezer. When it gets full we throw it away.
 
I typically put it straight in the dog dish and stir it up with their dry food. They love me for it and it is an easy way to dispose of it. I don't cook bacon often and there isn't that much grease to get rid of. My grandma used to keep it in a mason jar in her spice cabinet and she used it for just about everything.
 
So I'm bad... oftentimes, we'll leave the grease in the pan from morning eggs in case anyone wants eggs or something using the grease for lunch as well.

At the end of the day, it gets poured-- cooled-- into the trash.

On vacation every year, my great uncle makes his famous biscuits and gravy, and he has a jar which he stuffs with paper towels, then pours it in there, refrigerates it, and pulls the paper towels out when it's hardened, with all of the grease clinging to the paper towels.
 
We usually use an empty can, let it solidify and dispose of it. I usually broil bacon in the oven to avoid a big stovetop mess and then just ball up the tin foil afterwards.
 
Bacon grease goes in a coffee mug on the stove. When it gets full it gets dumped out. I don't use it as much as I used to, so usually it just gets thrown out, but occasionally it comes in handy.

My Granny used to keep hers in a coffee can in the cupboard, she also had a little ceramic type pig specifically for grease. She ALWAYS added a little to the shortening when she made fried chicken...I can never figure that out and probably why mine will never measure up to hers.
 
I keep it in a jar in the fridge and use it to fry potatoes or for recipes that have you cook bacon for just the grease.
 
I generally make bacon on paper towels in the microwave so I don't have a grease problem. :)

If DH is making it in a skillet it's part of a larger meal & he makes it first & uses the grease to make the pancakes & eggs.

I pour ground beef fat down the drain or onto paper towels & throw it away depending on how much there is.
 
I'm with Brook, it goes down the sink with the disposal on and hot water running. I don't fry food enough to have a designated cup for it. And it doesn't ever seem to harden even if I did that.
 
I keep an old pickle jar on the counter and it gets poured into there then tossed when it's full...I never use grease for cooking really
 
Love the foil idea! So simple but genius! I'm always hunting through the nasty trash for something to put the grease in.
 
We microwave our bacon....no grease!!

If we do happen to fry something with lots of grease....we rinse it down the sink with lots of hot water or we put paper towels in the pan until it cools and then throw it away. We grill most of our meat so we rarely have grease.
