RQOTD: Renovations!

The living/dining room - make it more conducive to conversations and long dinners, etc. Right now half of it is my workspace, the other half a very functional dining table/Mark's dumpsite for papers, etc. :/
 
I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately. I watch Love It or List It a lot on HGTV and I keep thinking about what room we could reno to make our house more livable.

My living room and kitchen are open concept and essentially all one room. I would have to choose that space to remodel. The living room area isn't as functional as it could be. The furniture placement is awkward and I have no idea how to make it better without some major reconstruction of the space.
 
We're just off the tail end of some major renovations-- turning the basement (former man cave) into an apartment after a major flood, and moving the laundry room upstairs and building a new pantry (the laundry room is where the old pantry was). We also repainted and refurnished almost every room in the house... except one.

The only room we really have major work to get done in is the old spare room (which was also Zach's room at one time, and before that an office-- it's been just about everything, really). We want to turn it into a game room. That's our BIGGEST renovation goal right now, and we hope to have it done within the next 6 months. The room is a huge disappointment at the moment-- it's just basically storage. :/ UGH! I hate having a totally nonfunctional room!
 
We had a non-functioning 'junk' room for 4.5 years! LOL We moved in and started putting boxes in the spare room so that I could go through them. This summer we cleaned it all out (finally!) and turned it into my daughter's room. Now her old room upstairs is going to be a craft room for me, but it needs work and I have no time to do it right now.
 
I have plans to overhaul our basement some time soon - we've gotten a few bids. Right now we have a game room, laundry room and some storage, but it's not a fabulous use of 950 sq ft, lol. Since we have another 2,600 sq ft of main living space on the other two floors, plus a detached garage, it's not like we absolutely need to do it, but it's a "nice to have" for sure.
 
My girls' bedroom. It is so not functional! I would love to make it work for them for more than just sleeping at night!
 
Our downstairs bathroom, the one with the peeling wallpaper and hole in the wall from the door handle hitting it. But we're in the process of doing that now. :) It was put on hold due to the shutdown, but now we can order the vanity and other things we need and hire a contractor. When they do the bathroom, they'll also be repainting my oldest child's room and we'll redecorate so that it looks like a 10 year old lives there instead of a 5 year old. Nothing major, but it's long overdue.
 
The laundry room. *sigh* - all those pretty laundry rooms on Pinterest drive me crazy! Mine is horrid. It seems like a simple thing to do, but I can't wrap my brain around it.
 
We just moved into our house a month ago. I hasn't been remodeled/updated since it was built 20yrs ago. I would most definitely updated/reno the kitchen. Would also have all the baseboards painted white and install new white doors.
 
Kitchen! We rent the apartment, so we can't do anything about it... but if we could, I'd tear the already-falling-apart kitchen and have my dream ikea kitchen! lol
 
We are in the process of deciding what we want to reno on our house... we looked at buying a different house this summer and it came down to we really love our location where our house is now and the other houses in our neighborhood really are too much money for what you get... so we are looking at what we can change in our current house so that we love it a bit more...

One of our big reno things we have been tossing around is changing up our laundry room area. Right now the laundry room has a 1/2 bath in it and it drives me nuts to think of doing my business in front of the washer/dryer - in fact we have lived in this house for almost 10 years and I have never used that bathroom... haha. So we have been thinking of building into the garage and "flip" the washer and dryer over the wall (the laundry room butts up against the garage wall now) and create a new laundry room with lots of cupboards and walk in pantry... and then where the washer/dryer was in the current laundry room/half bath, we would put up a wall of cupboards... our house seriously lacks storage... we hope to do that this winter... but have been lazy getting bids.

Otherwise, hubby wants to finish off the basement... but I'm not much of a basement person, so I find that lower priority... ;)
 
It's not a room, but I would kill for a better yard/outdoors area! The place we are renting has the worst yard that is pretty much totally unusable... I miss being able to have BBQ's and friends over and not to be couped up in the house all the time!
 
I'd love a bigger kitchen but short of blowing out the front wall of the house, or building a second floor for a master suite, that is not going to happen. :( It would also be nice to have an actual laundry room instead of the nook where the machines sit now. But there is no place to move it.
 
I want to finish the basement. I would love to get the boys in separate rooms. The rest of our finished space needs to be decorated, but nothing really needs renovation.
 
ours is our downstairs bathroom! It is mostly finished now except we have to get the shower floor redone.. we've been trying to get that finished for almost 3 years. lol
 
I'd have to say the kitchen. It's small and dark. I'd really like to put in a skylight and redo the cupboards. I'd also like to move my laundry room into the garage and turn the existing laundry room into a pantry and use the current "pantry" as a linen closet, as it was intended.
 
I have a classic 70s style kitchen with nasty floors and old everything. It's on our plans to redo in the next couple of years but kitchens are SOOOOOOO expensive.

I also have dreams of turning our garage into a lovely master suite, but that will come sometime after we have kids and need the extra space.
 
There are a few in our house that I'd love to change, but if I have to pick 1 it would be the kitchen for sure. Ours is so dysfunctional. We moved in last year, and haven't gotten around to fixing it up yet (too many other projects). It has really old, raggedy cabinets. Many don't close properly, they are just old and gross. Plus, the layout is terrible. Its a rectangular room, but only 2 of the walls are being used effectively. One wall has nothing at all on it, and the other 1 is just the stove. I'd love to replace the current cabinets and wrap them around the blank wall so that we could have more storage and counter space and get rid of the awkward blank wall. Plus, the floor is a bit slopy and needs leveling. I'm actually researching right now on possibilities for that that are very affordable.
 
Definitely the rooms upstairs. We have two large rooms that are the same size (no official master) and then one tiny room that is about the same size as is closet. We plan to knock down the closet/wall between the two rooms to make it into two medium-sized rooms for the kids and then have the other be the Master. It's been planned for a couple of years, but in the absense of my father-in-law beige able to come help us plan and price it out we've been doing other house projects, like getting a new water heater, and painting the house. I'm hoping for next summer, but we will have to see how the $$ is. 3 kids in one room will be hard.
 
I would turn our playroom open space upstairs into a bedroom. Right now my 6 year old boy is sharing a room with his 3 year old sister and they're driving me nuts!!!!
 
I have a list of projects in my house to work on. I have an unfinished storage room that we are in the process of finishing and turning into an office. Next big project will probably be the laundry room. It's huge, but it's full potential is not being fulfilled. I want to add cupboards throughout it (and I want to do that silly put a crystal light fixture in there). If I was going for dream renovation though it would be my master bathroom. I plan to eventually put in tile floors, but that's probably all I'll do. I wish I could put in a beautiful tile shower, etc.
 
I like hearing about your reno dreams (and realities!).

Our laundry room is another room that needs help. In fact, we have big plans to completely tear out one wall of the laundry room and open it up to the hallway (and thus the entry door to the garage). It is a crazy space right now that I find rather useless. We do laundry in there, but the space has potential and as it is we barely have room to do laundry - and it isn't a small room, just laid out poorly.
 
I would love a laundry room overhaul too! I wonder if I had a pretty laundry room I would be better with getting laundry done.. lol
 
I wouldn't. LOL My husband does the laundry around here (well, the kids do theirs). However, I wouldn't walk by the room and cringe. ;) It is just so awkward as it is. The washer and dryer face each other and there is barely room to open the dryer door. Not sure who decided that was a smart layout.

Maybe I wouldn't go in and out as fast as possible!

After this thread, I went on Pinterest to see if I could find any laundry rooms the size of ours and if there were any good ideas. So many of them have windows with awesome light! Ours goes from hallway to garage so the light is dismal. And I'm still drawing a blank as to what would help it. I know cleaning it up would be a good start. :blink:
 
Ours has two big windows but they are located right where I want to place the appliances when we remodel. That means replacing the windows since these are long windows. I need to go with shorter ones that would end right at the top of the appliances instead of below.
