Random Question of the Day: Do you volunteer?

I used to volunteer at Reading for the Blind & Dyslexic, recording school books for folks who needed to work from recorded texts. It's too far away from me now, so I have just been volunteering at the kids' school, but still keep thinking I want to get back to doing something more.

So, do you volunteer and if so, where?

I do when I have the opportunity and time. Mostly, I volunteer when there is a funeral. I usually help make some food for it. If there is someone sick, then I'll volunteer to take them some food. I even volunteered to help with a wedding last month. So, mostly, I volunteer in my church.

only because of time and transportation issues I dont but have in hte past and when someone I know needs help I will volunteer to help

I used to volunteer a lot, but now with working full-time and having a toddler, I just don't have the time. I am sure when he is older and becomes involved in activites, I will volunteer with those. I did a ton of volunteering with Cub, Boy & Girl Scouts so I look forward to maybe being a Den Mother. I also hope to volunteer with the PTA and any sports clubs he wants to be involved in. Most recently I volunteered with Adopt a Soldier where I wrote letters and sent packagaes to soldiers who didn't have anyone at home to write, too. I took a break from it though during a depressed time in my life, maybe its time to get back into it.

I wanted to volunteer at my son's school the last couple years but because I didn't have my license or a vehicle, I only managed to do so once. Now I'll be working weekdays and the kids will be going to school at their dad's 4 hours away, so it's not an option. If they come back here and go to school in the future I will volunteer though, since the school is an 8 minute walk away (and well, I have a car and am getting my license right away).

I volunteer some at the kids' schools. But not as much as I'd like to. Kinda hard with a baby, having to find a sitter and all. Hope to more when my kids are a little bigger and all in school. I have a few friends that work w/ our local pregnancy resource center, and I think that's something I might like to do. Also have a few friends in our local service league, and I may want to do that as well.

Mostly I just volunteer at & with our church. But, I live at least 20 minutes away from anything, so it's kinda hard. But, whenever we get to build a house, we want to move closer to town & then I'd love to do more volunteering. There's a Christian pregnancy crisis center just down the road from our church that I'd love to help out at! Also, there's this organization about 20 minutes away, also Christian, and they have a petting zoo & children's home. They completely run off of donations & most of their workers are volunteers. Would love to help out there too!

I have to many kids to volunteer now :D but when it was just the 2 girls and when my oldest son was little I volunteered at the school. Our library in town here was looking for volunteer book shelvers at the beginning of the summer and I really wanted to do it with the 2 girls.....I thought it would be a great learning experience for them and it would give us girls some time out of the house together.......but my library was a butt and said they didn't let kids under 13 do it.....I was like I'd be standing RIGHT THERE with them.......it's not like I was gonna turn them loose....and HELLO......it's FREE HELP!!!! Oh well....it was there lose!!!!

My Dh and I have talked about me not going back to work (like ever....) So perhaps when I get another kid or two in school I'll look at some things to volunteer for!!!!

I put other cuz I'm too busy to do it right now. But hopefully I can start back up soon once the wedding is done and things calm down a bit. I volunteer at my local animal shelter walking dogs (mostly pitties since they can be hard to handle for people who aren't prepared for them) and taking the dogs to off site adoption events. I really love having the ability to get the dogs out of the kennels, but also educate people about the bully breeds, and try to show their softer side. Not the "vicious" pit bulls that they are so often portrayed to be.

I don't currently volunteer, but I have in the past. I was a Brownie leader (Girl Guides) for two years, there wasn't enough interest for a Guide unit this year, so no leadership needed by me. Before that, I was a volunteer Officer for the Army Cadet Corps where I used to live, did that for many of years. I loved it!!

I don't volunteer much at all anymore. I'm not good at being social & most of the volunteer things seem to involve heavy personal interaction. Plus the few times I have usually end up with people expecting me to arrange & do everything while they just show up at the last moment & stand around. I donate things & money instead now. I find it much less stressful

:) this thread sparked my interest....I do volunteer: Girl Scout brownie leader, Girl Scout Neighborhood registrar, school PTG member, just signed up to be room parent mom (8th grade), team mom (soccer) and I am in charge of organizing volunteer opportunities in our local communities for my work. We get about 60 people/families/friends to come join us at various events from beach clean ups to food drives and so on.

I do work full time so most often these are things happen after hours or on the weekend and I always make sure it is something that my girls can participate in with me.

I do, mostly at the kids' school, community clean ups etc., the volunteer fire dept. in my mom's little town etc. Our family has a crazy schedule so I just do what I can when I can.

Yes, both at the preschool and with the woman's club that I'm in. We focus mainly on children's needs, but also participate in many activities in our community. Food bags, work with the local foster child organizations, supplies and clothing for migrant worker children, all the cancer walks, military support...pretty much if we see the need, we try and help.

I volunteer in the kids' program at church. I usually work in my own kids' classrooms so it works out pretty well. :)

i volunteer a lot at my kiddos' school(s). i used to be more active in volunteering at church but have given that up to mentor young pregnant women in crisis. pre and post pregnancy. i go for my orientation in the next couple weeks. i'm super happy that my personal crisis (being a teenage mom) has brought me to where i am today so others can benefit from what i've learned. i also just love to love on people so this should be fantastic! i'm stoked to start.

I wish we had something like that around here Lizzy. What a great organization!

I picked other because as of now, I don't really volunteer in an "organized" sort of way. I volunteer a lot at Emma's preschool and with her tumbling class, we help out with the local food pantry every year, but I'm not a registered volunteer for anything.

I volunteer as the Hopitality Chair at our preschool, so I oversee all our community events. We do a food drive, a clothing drive, an angel tree, and lots of smaller scale projects. Jason starts Kindergarten in a couple of weeks, so I may also join the PTA there. Definitely not interested in a leadership role there--my time is maxed out already!

I have been volunteering at my girls schools for the last 2 years and love it! This year I decided not to do the room mom thing tho, because last year I ended up being at the school almost every day for one reason or another. But I do help with Angel Tree, the Backpack food program, Boxes of Hope, Coats for Kids, Staff Appreciation, Red Ribbon Week, etc....I pretty much help with anything that the school is doing.
