RQOTD: Anyone buying new insurance on an exchange?

First things first: let's play nice and not turn this into a debate or brawl over the merits of Obamacare/Affordable Care Act. :)

Now on to the question: I am curious if anyone will be buying new healthcare insurance on the newly opened exchanges? I have insurance through my husband's work, so I don't have to think about it yet, but wondering if anyone has started looking into it who doesn't now have insurance, or when you plan to start looking?

I'm not, but the people I know who have tried have not been able to successfully log-in, stay logged in, or in some other way complete the process (and I'm not talking about people all in the same state).

One dear friend is desperate to get signed up and is so frustrated by the process.

I'd love to find out what we are eligible for. We have a family plan. DH's work insurance is 'in flux' currently & is outrageously expensive for families for various reasons & they are considering a few different options including just not having it.

But I can't seem to create an account. The system is always 'too busy' after I fill out all the questions for a login name.

Seriously irritating. It's not like they couldn't have known what would happen when it came online. And worrying too. If they can't get their act together enough to realize the system would be swamped with people adn so build a more robust system I really have to wonder what other parts are going to be like this down the road.

I am curious about what our rates would be and I want to check into it, but I want to wait a bit until things settle down. We have insurance through my husband's job and don't pay too much (IMO) but paying less is always appealing. :)

Not for my family, no...but I have done some looking for my mom. She had to drop her insurance several years ago because the costs kept going up and she lives paycheck-to-paycheck. Like no cable, no computer, just the necessities type of living.

As the gov't websites have been down (and I wasn't signing her up, just researching), I checked out the cost calculator. And from what was showing up, she still couldn't afford it. I'm hoping it's wrong, because for her it would wind up being pay the mortgage or pay for insurance. She might wind up paying the penalty and then going on Medicare when she's eligible next fall.

I doubt it. We have insurance thru Joel and just found out they are NOT dropping spouses who are able to get insurance their their own employer (that would be me. lol). So I think we'll still get pretty good insurance thru him. What's the website? I'd be curious to see what we'd have to pay.

not us since we have Tricae Prime since I retired fvrom the Navy and we only pat $500 a year for a family of 6 and we have very very reasonable copays ($12 sr visit, $25 specialty visit and the most for a RX is $44)...but I figure after 20 years in the military, I at least deserve that :) I hope everybody can one day get afforable healthcare like we do......

I'm curious too and hoping they get the websites working this week! I have good insurance through my hubby's work but I still think the whole process of setting up what is (mostly) a market-based insurance exchange is really interesting.

We have really good insurance through hubby's work, it's pretty reasonable too (I think we pay about $200 bucks a month). And it's going to stay the same even with ObamaCare going into effect because about 7 years ago my hubby's company went to a self insured group plan. They subcontract with Blue Cross Blue Shield and it's working so good that almost every year our premiums have actually gone down!!

I did that calculator Stacy posted and if I read it right, we'd actually pay more for that exchange insurance then we do now!!

I'm grateful that we have insurance through hubby's work as well, but ours is going up. Right now we have the top tier level, but it's going up so much that we'll probably have to drop down to the lowest level (and that will be about what we are paying now)

I think a lot of employers subsidize their employees health coverage so it's not too surprising that the exchanges would be more expensive than some employer policies. I wonder if employers will change their policies, though, knowing that people can get insurance through another mechanism. It is kind of curious, actually, that most insurance has been hrough employers which, when you come to think of it, doesn't necessarily make the most sense anyway. I mean, employers don't pay your car insurance or house insurance!
