really frustrating...

My daughter needed a new book for school. This is probably like the tenth book for school that we have had to buy or she has bought in the ohhh six weeks since school started. This time it is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. A really good book from what I remember. Its been many years since I read it. The frustrating part though is that her teacher wanted a certain printing of the book. The closest place to get it is nearly 30 miles from home. So I go to the cloest bookstore and they dont have that printing of the book but they do have plenty of another printing. It was 5.95. I call my daughter and she said no it cant be that book it has to be the other. I ask the guy at the help desk and he said the same thing that her teacher had actually ordered many ahead of time for the students to pick up but they were all out. So guess when she needs the book by? Tomorrow!! And then to top it all off she calls tonight and is still at school for a dress rehearsal and says that we are just going to have to go buy the one that just would not do yesterday!! I knew I should have just bought it anyhow. She said no but the wrong copy is better then no book at all right? I mean it is even printed by the same company the only difference is that the ones she wants is a little smaller then the one we were going to buy. All that means is fewer words per page on hers I would imagine. I dont know but I find this specific crap that the teachers request is just ridiculous!!

Unless there's a significant difference in printings, the teacher should just let the kids buy a copy of the book. Goodness gracious!!! :thumbdown:

I think the only difference is footnotes? Or a foreward...my daughter told me but I cant remember now what she said. The story itself is the same though.

Dang, I can't even believe they are making you buy books now. I remember when we didn't even have to supply our own pencils!

well she has to write notes in the margin so she cant borrow the book. I remember that all we had to have from our own supply is a pen/pencil, notebook paper and folders. Now they want several binders, notebook paper and spiral notebooks, pens of certain colors and certain brands of pencils etc etc.

That would be frustrating! If there are only minor differences then she should be ok. I am actually using a first edition text for my History of Photography class and it is supposed to be the second edition. They are somewhat similar just some of the stuff is mixed around but I have found it easy to keep up. Best of luck to her!!

Ugh, I hope that it's ok, I know we did the same thing with Romeo and Juliet, we needed a specific edition, but it turns out it just had less pages, NOTHING else was different!

I bet the issue has to do with reading assignments ... read from this page to this page ... read this paragraph on this page, and what are your thoughts ... she will be looking in the wrong spot if it isn't the same print edition.

The teacher should have reserved more copies ... that's a shame! Hopefully it won't be too big of a difference! Hugs!

Wow! Thats so sad... they used to hand out the books when I was going to school.
If it is required that you pay for it, they should be sooo darn picky.:thumbdown:

Dude that freakin sucks! Its bad enough you have to buy it but then for them to be so damn picky, whatever happened to that old saying Beggers can't be choosers LOL Not sure how it applys but I think that if its not a significant difference it should be to your discretion.
