read aloud road trip suggestions...

we're going on a little road trip this weekend [crossing fingers that no one else gets sick] and am wanting a really great book to read aloud to my boys during the journey. they're 8, 5, & 2.5.

was thinking about the first Harry Potter... any thoughts or suggestions?
would love something adventurous & imaginative.
 
Nim's Island is one we recently did in the car. It's kind of fluff 'adventure' but it's short, so you can finish it in one trip.
 
I think HP is going to be out. I think it might be too scary for them... my boys cannot do scary.

was also thinking on the Earthsea Series by Ursula Le Guin... it's been a long time since i read them & can't recall if they're scary or not.
 
my boys love adventure, highly imaginative, fantasy type themes... as long as they're not scary.
 
My kids have never really taken to fantasy adventure, but I've found Roald Dahl chapter books span age ranges well; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc. Both of mine at ages 5 and 8 liked Indian in the Cupboard too.

They would like Nim's Island, then. Not scary. We listened to the book, and then I borrowed the movie from the library afterwards. The kids loved it.

Here's a few on my list to borrow from the library next:
James and the Giant Peach
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (read by Paul Newman)
The Jungle Book
Doctor De Soto
 
One of my absolute favorite series of books when I was a kid were the Encyclopedia Brown stories. I think your boys will like the mysteries and interaction with the stories is essential as the reader helps to solve the cases. They're pretty fun and definitely not scary.

Roald Dahl for sure. He instantly popped into my head. My 7 yr old is reading Tashi books at the moment which are quite fun too.

This is my son's absolute favorite book. We bought him a audio book of that read by Eric Idle :thumbup:. It's fantastic and he listens to it over and over and over.

I personally think it's an excellent book and WAY better than of those movies.

As for James and the Giant Peach, I think he overplayed the 'wicked step mother' a bit to much. My son didn't really go for that book.
 
We also LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the Humphrey books by Betty Birney. The first book is the weakest and then they just get better and better. My son's favorite is 'Summer According to Humphrey' where they go to summer camp. The 10th book came out in January and we have eagerly purchased the whole collection.
 
Another one that might work for multiple ages is 'Half Magic' by Edward Eager. It's an older book and as such has wonderful language, which I really enjoyed reading. And the story itself is really intriguing with magic only 1/2 way!!
 
mine are about those ages and we recently did A Wrinkle in Time, and they loved it. now we're working on Peter Pan and the boys are liking it WAY more. it's so different than the Disney movie. in the past the big boys and I have read aloud the Ramona books and Stuart Little and some of the Hardy Boys books. the boys REALLY like the Ramona books.
 
I will say that Peter Pan was a sort of slow start and kind of wordy, but once you get into it it's really great.
