Rainbow Cake

sahre your favorite recipe and decorating tips...I want to do this for Abby's birthday next week...also looking for simple ideas to decorate :)
 
I have no advice because I've never done it! I definitely want to though - I have a bunch of ideas for it pinned on pinterest. I am thinking about doing it for Easter. I'd do birthdays, but they are so cool that I'd be afraid all 5 of the kids would request them every year and I'd be making them constantly LOL :)
 
When I made mine I just used two boxed white cake mixes, divided each in three parts and added each of six food colorings to each part. It was pretty cool looking!
 
I did it with Bella's second (maybe...?) birthday cake and everyone thought it was so cute. I just divided 2 cake mixes into two parts each and did a different color for each. Then I slowly, and carefully, poured them on top of each other. It was wavy looking and neat that way, I liked it more than individual layers. We did simple white icing with rainbow sprinkles.
 
I've done cupcakes a few different times. For Mardi Gras last year I made them with yellow, purple and green. This set I made for St. Patrick's Day...

I took 2 boxes of white cake mix. I separated into 6 little bowls and added food coloring. Then I just scooped a little bit at a time into each cupcake liner. Some looked better than others depending on how well I got all of the colors layered in. They were all super cute though. :) I used cool whip as icing... super easy and tasty!
 
Oh and I made a layer cake- cooked each layer separately & put frosting between each layer. I've done cupcakes, too... the way Sherri described. :)
 
I did cupcakes once. I used the regular (non-gel) food coloring and it made pastel colors. So if you want vibrant rainbow colors, use better food coloring.
 
I defeinetely want to do a layered cake, and I was certainly thinking about using just boxed cake mix LOL!
 
It's been a few years but I think I used box mixes...I made 1 box at a time, split it in half and baked each color in it's own pan (so I made 3 batches as I only have 2 round cake pans). I iced it with a light blue color & cut some marshmallows in half & grouped some together to make clouds & used a Dora candle on top :)

I was lazy & didn't level my layers before stacking them so it was a little tricky to ice, haha! And I stuck a few skewers in to help stabilize it :D Next time I will level them...

love the cupcake idea...I am thinking of a rainbow party for my girls 3rd birthday next week.
 
Oooh that looks delicious Erica :D I'll have to find an excuse to bake one of these, we're just out of birthday season here, lol.
 
I did one from scratch, but wasn't really happy with the taste for some reason (go figure!) I suggest buying gel coloring (like Wiltons for example), they are thicker and and more concentrated color than food coloring drops. I didn't frost the outside edges, I wanted to see the rainbow!
