Karen - can you share your secret on making your text fit around an object? Like in this LO, how did you shape your journal block to the circle next to it?

I hope it's something you can do in PSE5 'cuz that's all I got!

Hi Sam, I'm not Karen but I might be able to help you with that.
I don't *think* Karen did anything special to the text. Just click on your text tool, then make sure your "text align left" button is clicked (its located at the top of your photoshop in the toolbar when the text tool is selected).
Then just type your journaling til you come near the shape and press enter to go to the next line.
Nothin at all to it!
HTH!

On the text on the photo...I did just what Mandy said - dragged out a text box and then made sure the text was aligned to the right.

For the text on the bottom...
--I created a new layer
--used the marquee tool to drag out a rectangle (which did overlay the circle)
--then used the paint bucket tool to flood fill this rectangle
--Ctrl + right click on the thumbnail preview in the layers pallette of the outside circle (marching ants will now appear around the circle)
--Expand the selection...something like Select ==> Expand (not sure...don't have PS open at the moment) and I usually try 40 pixels
--Ctrl + X to cut this part out of the rectangle that I had created.

if there are more items that the text needs to go around...I usually Ctrl + Click on the 1st layer...then Ctrl + Shift + click on any other layers

This will give me a shape that I want my journaling contained in, then

--Ctrl+click on the thumbnail preview in the layers palette of this custom shape layer I created
--Click on the Path pallette
--Create a path (forgot which icon it is at the bottom of the layers palette...again, I don't have PS open at the moment)
--Click the text icon
--Click in the shape and start typing. The text will be confined to the custom shape I had created.

In the LO you linked above...I only had it left aligned.

I use paths a lot in helping me shape my journaling...esp b/c I just want to type (or copy and paste lol) and not think about hitting return here or there.

It sounds pretty laborious, but it's real quick...maybe b/c I use it a lot lol.

here are some other LOs I've used paths to help in shaping my journaling Megan!, Over and Over and Over, Dismount, Sand, Insecure and Queen

Yeah...I like to link up my LOs lol.

HTH!

Thanks Mandy and Karen, I'll give it a try hopefully sometime this weekend. Hmmm, hitting the return key...why didn't I think about that?!

Thanks for the step-by-step Karen, it's exactly what I need! :D

Have fun trying it out :)

Actually I use the paths b/c I don't want to have to hit the return key lol.

Hey Karen....I'm trying to do this in PS and I've totally got it up to the part where you say create a path, I guess I don't know how to do that! I found the path tool on my toolbar but I'm just not sure what to do other than clicking it. Can you tell me?

I think this is an awesome tip/tutorial and I can't wait to use it. I spend SO much time formatting my journaling.

In the Layers Palette...there are 2 other tabs there, look at the top of the layers palette (at least for me lol): "Channels" and "Paths".

Assuming you have your shape w/marching ants around it...
--Click on the Paths tab
--Near the bottom there are 6 icons, the 3rd from the right is the "make work path from selection"...click that
--The marching ants should stop and there's just an outline of your selection

Then you can go back to following the other directions.

Here are some old screenshots I have sitting around in my photobucket that may better help you visualize what in the world I'm talking about lol

I've circled the Paths tab and the arrow is pointing to the "make work path from selection"

When I mentioned above to Ctrl + click on the thumbnail preview of the layer...I've circled the area I'm talking about below:

When you move your cursor inside the shape, your cursor should change and look like what I circled below:

karen I got it to work now - thank you! this is fantastic! I soooo appreciate your time to answer my question - yippee! :)

woohoo! I love it that I don't have to fiddle too much w/my journaling...just paste it in. When i use to do it 'manually' by hard returning in PS...it would just take forever if I decide to change the wording or if I need to change the font lol.

oh exactly! I always do it manually and it's no problem and then I decide to change the font.....eek! 20 minutes later....

seriously I'm just thrilled - if I could only learn one thing this week, this was the best it could be! LOL!

Hi Karen. It's me Nonnie. Thanks so much for those instructions. Now I can practice and see if I can do it. Always wanted to. You are so smart girl.

hmmm don't see the "path" like you showed...assuming that means that my PSE 4.0 doesn't have it huh...

BUMMER.... that would make things sooo much easier!
