Question about uploads?!

 When I make a page, I usually make it in a 12x12 size, when I need to save and upload for this site, the process I go thru is this:
resize all to 3x3, save as a jpeg, then it asks me to what quality to save, and i usually have to pick the lowest quality.... only it seems to lose some of the original look to it?????
Is this what everybody else goes thru too????? Or is there a better way??
Thanks so much!

You don't need to lower the quality a lot, in fact I lower it very little. Just enough so that the file size meets the required 150k limit.

I usually flatten my layout, resize to 500x500px then use 'save for web' to save it and usually set the quality in there to around 65. This seems to keep i under the 150k requirement and not lose much quality.

I use IrfanView (free at download.com). I save mine as a JPEG 500x500 300 dpi with a quality setting of 8 to 10 and I don't think mine lose any quality at all.

I do the same as Sara, except a quality setting of either 70 or 80...depending on the layout. I put the highest quality setting I can without going over the limit.

I wrote an action in PS to Save for Web at 500x500. One click, and it's done, and saved in the "Web Galleries" folder. So easy! :)

When I had PC, I used a free program called Pix Resizer. It was awesome!!

Now that I'm on Mac, I use the resize for web option in my CS3, then 500x500 at 72 dpi.

I also flatten, resize to 500 x 500 (leaving it at 300dpi) and Save As w/a quality around 7 or 6. If that isn't to my liking, I will use the Save For Web

I flatten as well, resize to 500x500 then save for web. Once that screen comes up I click the little arrow thingy and choose optimize to file setting and put in 150 and it automatically saves with a high quality but w/in the file size limit :)

I flatten, resize to 500x500 and save for the web. I save as a JPEG and just make sure the size is below 150. I also set a PS action to do this for me.

The key is to flatten, I think.

Yea that little arrow is KEY! Mine quality is usually around 75 and the size stays below the 150 that most sites require.

Like Kat, I use ifranview and I love it. I just open my layout, resize to 500x500 or 600x600 and save as a jpeg. SO easy and ifranview is free!

Should I be doing this to all my pages that i make?

Flattening? YES - that creates a jpg so you can print it, email it, etc, etc. FWIW, I always keep my psd file until I've printed and proofread a few times...once you flatten you can't make changes to any of the layers! After I print and if I don't see any spelling mistakes, I delete the psd because it's so huge.

ROTFL!!!! Maybe thats why my computer is running soooooo slow!!!!! I have made almost 75 projects in less than a month. . . and haven't done any of that!!!! Do the majority of you guys print at home or take them some place?? What is better?:p

I print at Costco. But I know that several people prefer printing at home. I've also been happy with Shutterfly. But usually I print at Costco so that I can have my layouts in my hands in an hour. :)

When I 1st started I would order 12x18 enlargement prints ($2.99) at Costco in their photo department. i would create a new 12x18 document in my photoshop and plop 2 8x8 LOs and several photos along the edges. I upload online and have DH pick them up.

Last april or May...I got hundreds printed at Scrapbook Pictures when they had a $0.99 sale on their 8x8s. They had a promo several weeks ago on photo prints and I heard there's gonna be another promo next month...though I'm not sure what.

If there's another sale at Scrapbook Pictures...I'm getting them printed there.

Be aware, most photo places...there may be some parts cut off near the edges. So just make sure you don't have anything important ont he edges.

thanks for the hint about a sale at scrapbookpictures... I should get my layouts ready for printing just in case :)

yeah...don't know what their sale's gonna be for...but before the New Year I u/l ALL the ones I still needed printed lol.

I do what Meg does. Mostly because Meg taught me how. LOL

Also, if you run an unsharp mask (filter -> sharpen -> unsharp mask) after you flatten and resize, but before saving for web, you will get amazingly crisp images. You don't even have to change the settings, just run it at the default (should be 85%, 1 pixel, and 4 (something)).
