Question about Actions

I snapped this shot of Zach today, just on a regular P&S. I think that an action might make it pop more. Does anyone have a suggestion of an action that would look really good on this? Just your opinions...

I've never bought an action for photo editing before, and I'm totally in the market for one.

I would try some freebies first if you've never used actions before. There are lots on Facebook if you become a fan of their pages - My Four Hens Photography, Paint the Moon Photography, MCP Actions, Totally Rad Actions, Oh So Posh Photography, Yellow Sky Actions, Pure Photoshop Actions are just a few of the ones I can think of. My favorites are My4Hens and Paint the Moon so I would probably start there :)

I use Pioneer Woman's free actions on almost everything. She has a fresh color and a burst action that make everything brighter.

What exactly is an action? Is it something you download and use in Photoshop?

Yep. But you can also make your own in PS. It's practically a saved sequence of editing steps. For example: You first reduce the saturation, then increase the contrast, then add a drop shadow. You can save these steps into an action called #1. Now when you have the next photo, you don't have to do all the steps individually, but just run the action.

There are a lot of actions available on the internet, that combine editing steps to make your photos look better or apply a certain visual style to them. But you can also use actions for pretty much anything you do regulary in PS. For example I have an action to create the photo "holes" in some of my png quickpages. My action adds a white frame to the photo layer and then cuts out the background under the photo. So you see, it's just a time saving method.

Also the big advantage is, that you dont have to re-invent the wheel every time, when someone has already found a wonderful way to edit a photo. You download their action, apply it to your photo and voila! The disadvantage is, that not every photo is the same. So you sometimes have to tweak a bit to make it fit your particular picture.

Well isn't that something? I might have to do a little looking into that! I wish there were a few more hours in the day!

Can you make an "action" for turning your layouts into web ready jps for posting to the gallery? I'm just starting to post to the gallery and that would save a lot of hassle!
