I have a job interview tomorrow with my dream company, and I am a WRECK. I barely slept last night, and I still have one more day to go! Since it is back in Indiana, it's actually a Skype interview which adds to the stress.

Share your best/worst/weirdest/most interesting interview stories. Let's emphasize the BEST stories, shall we?! :p
 
Long story... but yup. DH does NOT like Wyoming/being this far from our families/being this far from his son. I truly do not think anything will happen with this particular job after this interview tomorrow so I'm not packing up quite yet. :p
 
Um, considering my last interview was, um, about 10 years ago, I don't remember much...

I do remember the exit interview though...I brought up the point that I thought this one guy was my boss, but another lady kept acting like my boss and it was very confusing who I was actually working for. The guy (who was doing the interview/who I thought was my boss), was like, "yeah we didn't clarify that very well." Um, ya think??? :cursing:
 
God my last job interview was in late 2006 so I don't remember much

The last interview I went to was when my company was talking about major organization restructuring and I was looking for my plan B. I was a corporate computer trainer and interviewed with a insurance company for a instructor position - I impressed them that they offered me a second interview... but I declined - going through the first interview, I realized quick that I didn't want to work there - they were a good 5 years behind in instructional development than I was used to... and in the second interview, I had to teach a potato how to use a computer. umm, yeah... no thank you.

My hubby has been going through a messed up interview process... he has applied for this job for three times... finally got an interview scheduled - they cancel - they offered the job to someone else... then a month later, they call again and he does the first interview... they scheduled the second interview and then they called and canceled - someone internal came forward and they gave that person the job... then a month later, they call him in for the second interview... was told he would hear back in the week - they never called... he called them and they said that they were still interviewing... really? I tell him to cut the cord... but he is really interested in this position and it would be a 180 change for him - I think he is going through a midlife crisis. haha
 
I read "back in Indiana" and thought, "wait, what?!"...then kept reading lol! Wyoming can be a hard place to live. And being so far from family is hard too (or at least it is for me). Good luck!
My last interview was 2005...I stayed there until I left to stay at home with Rian in 2009. It was a great interview because he said he was looking for personality. Interviews in my "career" are hard because a lot of it is showing skills but then you have to show how great you can interact with complete strangers...then every dentist has different ways to do the same procedure so you just pray you don't drop instruments and can catch on quick. So, working interviews were stressful.

Sorry I'm no help! Different careers require different interviews. A Skype one would be interesting! I'd be so scared about what they could see around me, in the background lol! You'll do great though. Good luck!!

You'll do fine! And heck a Skype interview sounds awesome!! You could totally wear business wear on the top and PJs on the bottom -- and then you would have your own AWESOME interview story!!

I haven't worked in over 13 years since my oldest was born and the job I worked before he was born I just kind of slid into since I was doing my clinical rotation at the hospital and it was more of a "hey you do a really good job would you like to work here when you graduate?" kind of thing. So basically one day I wore my student scrubs and then next day I started wearing my own "cool" ones!

Interviews are why I work for myself. They are the worst. :D

My favorite interview story though was in college, I interviewed for a copy writer position with the university paper. I was not an English major nor was I all that excited about writing but I figured I had decent enough English skills and the paper seemed fun so I applied. As part of the interview they had me take a quiz and I knew I was in trouble when for some of the questions I was thinking, "I didn't realize there was a difference between these words?" LOL! It was way beyond basic "there their they're" type of stuff.

It all worked out though since I instead was hired as a layout designer which was a much better fit. :D

As a hiring manager, I've conducted 100's of interviews - maybe even over 1,000. Even though you didn't ask for advice, I will give you some anyway :)

If the job sounds like something you'd want, always express your interest and ask for the job! So many times I walk away from the interview not really knowing whether the candidate is enthusiastic or not.

Be prepared to explain what you did to prepare for the interview, I'm always impressed when people have researched the company, etc ... and can articulate why I should hire them. As a hiring manager I want to know what value you will add to the organization (not how the position will benefit you ... which is what I hear more often).

Mine isn't about me, but from one of my co-workers. We interview for promotions and a couple of years, we were going through the process. One of the guys, went into the room in his dress uniform and he said he remembered feeling a bit confused because normally the door is closed, you knock, enter and give a reporting statement, but that day, the door was open. He walked in and when he went to sit down, since he was out of sorts, he tripped over the wheel on the chair and started to fall back into the chair. His jacket slide down and when his butt hit the chair, one of the suit buttons flew off towards the people conducting the interview. It was really funny (and he did end up getting the position, if that helps).
 
The last time I went through a formal interviews process was when applying to post-graduate training programs. In one instance, one university was overseeing a program within it's own city, and one in the northern part of the province. And both interviews were held at the same time, in the same room, by the same people!!! :unsure: So I'm trying to say yes, I want to be in urban center with one breath, while saying I want to be way out in the middle of nowhere with the next. It was the most confusing interview I ever had to go through.

Fortunately, I ended up where I wanted to be, which was at neither of those spots! :)
 
Good luck! I went back to work last year after 11 years as a SAHM, but I got lucky and essentially had a volunteer position turn into a paid one. Officially there was an interview, but it lasted about 5 minutes and was just so the Director could say we'd done one.

Before that I had 3 real jobs between graduating college and becoming a SAHM, and I barely remember any of the interviews. I do know that when I switched from teaching to working for a nutrition non-profit they gave me a typing test. This was more than 15 years ago and I didn't spend nearly as much time on a computer then as I do now...I suspected I'd done abysmally and that would be the end of that. But I ended up with the job and spent more than 3 years there. To this day I have no idea if I did better than I thought, if the other candidates were even worse, or if the boss decided to ignore the typing test results.

They said they would let me know by the end of the day... and they did. I am one of two or three finalists for the position.

I am trying to psych myself up (rather than out) by telling myself that it is my position to lose, KWIM?!

I don't have a definitive date yet on when my second interview will be, but soon as they want to fill the position by the beginning of November! I am trying not to think abt having to make that 2-3 day drive BACK across the country. :D
 
I don't have any super interesting stories about actual interviews...

The job I have now was kind of funny though. I went to a PTO meeting and my daughter's previous year's principal asked me if I wanted a job. I did. Then I didn't because I felt bad that I'd miss too much of my new kindergartener's stuff at school. I declined and she called me back a week later with an offer for part time. I agreed and started working right away. So... after I had worked there for like 3 weeks she came in and had me fill out an application. LOL - Then, I worked there for 2 years and the guy who did technology in our building was transferring to the middle school. He caught me in the hall one morning and said "you're going to take my job, right?" I laughed. He approached the principal about it and next thing I knew, I had a new position. After I had been training for a few weeks with the guy who was transferring, the 'big boss' in the technology department came over to 'interview' me. They made it sound all formal when he just walked in, introduced himself and literally sat and bs'd with me for 15 minutes. I had been all nervous for nothing. LOL I did discover later that there were several people waiting on the tech position to open up for in-district applications. They were really disappointed that it never did. I had no idea that others were wanting the job. I wasn't even sure I did. I love it now though. :)
