Puppy help!!

Okay, so quick story... My grandfather died almost 5 years ago & then my grandmother died almost 2 years ago. So, when she died, the family go together & went through all their stuff. My grandfather had this certain chair that was his & that's where he always sat. Well, noone else wanted to take it, so I got it! I'm thrilled that I was able to get my Papa's chair!
Well, this morning, yesterday & the day before, Bryant, my puppy has started peeing on this chair! Luckily, it's leather, so it does clean easily, but that's not the point. I've punished him for it every time & I clean it really good to try to get the smell to go away. He's also soaking the floor underneath it. But, he keeps going right back to the same spot! He's house broken & hasn't had an accident in the house in a couple of months! This is something new he's doing & I'm ready to beat the crap out of him! (of course, I won't literally! lol) Anyway suggestions on how to get him to stop? I have Bitter Yuck which we used to get him to stop chewing on the couch & it worked, but I'm scared to try it on the chair b/c I'm scared it might ruin it. I just need help before he becomes an outdoor dog! :mad:
 
Is he neutered? I'm wondering if he's starting to mature in that sense and he is marking the chair as his own. You may want to neuter him if that's the case. What are you cleaning the pee with? The urine smell may still be detectible to him. If you haven't already, try and get a pet spray that is designed to eliminate the urine odor. This one works really well: http://www.petastic.com/
Its the formula of what nature's miracle used to be. then they sold their label only to another company and then they renamed it. This formula works WAY better than nature's miracle does. You could do a test spot on the chair to make sure it doesn't ruin it. Someplace you can't easily see. Alot of times if the scent isn't completely gone they will continue to pee on it. Is it possible to block off that room from him for awhile? It is so frustrating to deal with this. If it becomes a recurrent problem though you may want to take him to the vet to rule out a UTI. I hope he shapes up and stops this behavior.

Oh, one last thought is to put a scat mat around it.

Instead of putting it on the chair you could get a few to put around it...
 
I use the pet stain & odor remover by Out!. It has seemed to work so far everywhere else we've used it before he was house broken. We've been meaning to get him fixed. maybe that will help. I'll talk to DH about finding a vet to set up an appointment! Thanks Emily!

getting him neutered will TOTALLY help with the marking issue. Its a hormone thing thats making him "mark his territory" and it will probably go away after he is fixed.

Happy to help. Neutering will help tremendously. And besides, if you don't neuter him soon he may start humping everything that moves. And well, that's not a fun thing to deal with either...lol
 
Everyone gave awesome advice! DEF get him neutered, there's no reason not to. Did you adopt him from a rescue? Lots of rescues offer certificates to decrease the cost of spay/neuter services.

No, we didn't get him from a rescue. We're not too worrie about the cost issue though, especially if it'll help w/these problems!
 
UGH!!!!!! He just did it again!!!! :thumbdown: I'm gonna see if I can find a place tomorrowto get him fixed!
 
Can you block off around the chair, to prevent him from getting to it? He'd probably still pee on whatever is blocking it, but at least it wouldn't be on your grandfathers chair.

I need to see if there's something I can put around it. It'd definitely be better than the chair!
 
What about one of those baby playyard gate type things? Do you have a crate? Maybe put him in it for the rest of the day. lol, kind of like grounding!

well, we didn't think he'd get as big as he has so he doesn't fit in his crate anymore. And no baby stuff as we don't have any kids. He's been outside all day.
 
I'm going to guess that an animal has previously "done its business" in the chair.... We have a 7 month old (Old English Sheepdog) puppy who used to do her business on the carpet in our new house! She'd go all night though, without peeing, while staying in our bedroom with us- and I decided it's because we have hardwood in the bedroom.... Luckily we were planning on tearing out the carpeting downstairs (I don't know why the previous owners covered the beautiful, original hardwood with ugly green carpeting!). Since we got rid of the carpet, she's had no accidents whatsoever, and that was about 5 months ago. I'm guessing the previous owners had a pet who went on the carpet, and that was why she was doing it also.... So that's why I wonder if maybe an animal has done its business in the chair before, and your pup is trying to mark it as "his"?

Hope you get it resolved! Maybe you can get him his own doggie bed that he knows is his, so he'll leave the chair alone?

Seriously, owning a dog will teach you LOTS about raising kids. What kind of doggy is he?

Actually Rachael, I'm positive no animal has ever used this chair besides mine. My grandfather got it new & they didn't allow animals in their house. & Bryant's the only pet we have. We're the only 2 owners.
And, very true Emily, he's definitely a kid! LOL Actually everyone thinks he's a black lab, but he has no lab in him. He just looks exactly like one! lol He's a (black) cocker spaniel & beagle mix!
And, thanks Jenny! I think he's adorable too, just not when he's peeing on my furniture! LOL
