PSD or TIFF?

Okay this is probably silly to you pros but I'm doing some cleaning and organizing, and finding many kits that have both the PSD and TIFF files. I realize the TIFF are smaller and I've seen a thread that talks about saving your finalized layouts as TIFF to save room. But I'm wondering are TIFF files what you can use to create your layout same as PSD? I use PSE 8 and have only worked with PSD files so far...am a little clueless :)
 
Yes, you can use layered TIFFs instead of PSDs. If you save them with the correct settings, they are smaller files and sometimes even half the size. Plus when I had Vista you couldn't see thumbnails of PSDs and you can view the thumbnails for TIFFs in the Windows viewer.

Settings when saving:
Image Compression: LZW
Pixel Order: Interleaved
Byte Order: IBM PC/Mac (depending on your computer)
Layer Compression: ZIP

LOL...THNAK YOU for posting this!! I was part of the other discussion we had on this and afterwards I went to save as TIFF files and had NO clue how too, LOl! Thanks Meg!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the TIFF file is compressed - but the compression is lossless... so you're not losing any quality or important data. Esentially it looks like the same file in PS and acts the same way - it's just a different file format and it is smaller than the PSD equivalent.

However, some programs that can read PSDs (aside from PS) as layered files are unable to open a layered TIFF in layers. (I think....) But as far as PSE/PS goes, I highly recommend saving TIFFs instead of PSDs.
 
Yep - Megan's right. There's no loss in the TIFF, and you gain SPACE! :)

If you're downloading both the .psd and .tiff of a template set, you can just choose whichever one you want to work with and just download it as they're the same file, just in different formats for however you'd like to work it.
 
SO glad Jinkies showed me this thread!! I hated not being able to see my png files. Thanks for sharing this!
