pretty scary (ETA photos)
I really hate thunderstorms. Living in Florida with them occurring almost daily is really bad for me LOL. Well about an hour ago it was not even raining here. All of a sudden a bolt of lightning hit right next to our house. It was so close I could feel the elctricity in the air. I heard a breaker click too so I knew it was close. I look outside after checking the house to make sure nothing was on fire from the hit and see the tree next to our house had some weird stripes all the way down it that were not there earlier. It had started raining at this point so I wait for the rain to slow down and go outside and there is bark from the tree about thirty feet out and one of the top branches is broken nearly in half where it connects to the tree. This is the same tree which survived all the hurricanes in 2004 but has been leaning pretty badly since then. It is so tall though and my husband has been putting off cutting it down because it is gonna be a job. I think he isnt gonna have much choice now though cause most likely if the lightning did hit it like I think it is probably going to die. Scared the crap outta me though cause it was sooo loud. Ive never heard an explosion that loud before in my life. Thankfully the storm has passed and everything seems to be ok.
picture of the tree itself (as much as I could fit in the picture anyhow)
the damage is kinda circled all the around the tree from almost all the way at the top to the very bottom:
