Update on Naomi! (warning:graphic photo!)

UPDATED ON PAGE 4

okay, please understand that the photo I'm going to post isn't pretty...if you are squeamish you can just skip over this thread or read and skip the photo...I'm not sure exactly what's going to happen, but we have an appointment with a surgeon at 3:45 this afternoon and Naomi could use your p&pt.

10 days ago we noticed Naomi's toe was red and swollen. David had a very uncomfortable medical treatment last year over a simple cut on his finger getting very infected, so we didn't take any chances. We immediately took her in to the ER (it was Sat). and they gave us a round of antibiotics, said it was an infected ingrown toenail, and said if it didn't get better she would have to have it removed.

Fast forward to a week later, this past Satruday, we took her back in because it was looking worse. The skin is just flaking off of her poor little toe and it looks like it hurts a lot. She mostly complains about shoes, or when she trips, hits it on a toy, etc. They said we'd need to wait until Monday and get a referal from our Ped to a DPM or surgeon, but that the only thing that was going to make it get better at this point was for sure removal.

They were able to act quickly this morning and we have an appt with a surgeon this afternoon (the ped didn't want to go the DPM route).

The surgeon's MA said that they had two options, one would be giving her several injections into her toe and removing the nail in the office (they would not be offering anything to calm her so I'm not sure how we'd deal with a man coming at her toe with a knife).

She said that he could do that, or he could schedule her for full surgery for it, and that it would be his discretion. She also said he could prescribe a different antibiotic and see her on Friday. I'm a nervous wreck and 3:45 right now seems like 3 weeks away.

And, for the non-squeamish, here's a photo of my poor two year old baby's toe:

I have never had an ingrown toenail but I feel terrible for her :(

OUCH!! That looks painful! I hope that they can help her today and that it won't be traumatic for her and that it will heal quickly!

omg Lena...poor thing...did they happen to mention anything about soaking in some kind of cleanse and warm water? we see that alot of here {especially with people wearing boots and the heat} and sometimes we recommend that and with a few treatments, sometimes their nail just falls off :) I'm not a doctor, but I don't suppose it would hurt {more on the medic side of the house}...and I am sure she might rather soak her foot in some nice warm water then get a few needles :) I will definetely have her in my p&pt!

I have ingrown toenails all the time, and NOW I know how to handle them before they get bad. But my first one got to that point to and I had to have it surgically removed. it was a total piece of cake and didn't hurt at all. But yeah they hurt like the very devil if anything touchs, it's one of the worst pains I've ever had, I can only imagine what it must be like in a small child. I hope the afternoon passes quickly and you soon have a game plan. You could try soaking it in warm water with epsom salt though..that helps me.

I'll keep her in my prayers!

My hubby had his toenail removed several years ago and when he had it done it really hurt.. they say the toe is hard to get completely frozen cause of the nerves.. I can't imagine a little child having to sit through that without getting sedation of some kind :( Hopefully they go the surgery route (its what I think i'd want anyways)

Ouch...poor sweetie. Okay, I had an ingrown toenail that bad once. I let it go way to long, and it got really badly infected. I had the office procedure and I don't recommend it. First, it hurt, as I could feel the pressure, and when the freezing wore off, it burned like a bugger. Second, my nail grew back anyway, and it grew back ingrown. So my recommendation would be to get it done in surgery. Her age, the condition of the toe....it would be better that way I'm sure.

Poor little dear.

OUCH. My kids have had similar toenail incidents but they have all cleared up on their own. My husband also gets imbedded hangnails and I've seen his toes look like that. He's insane and digs the nail out himself. I'm shocked he's never gotten a horrible infection. I think we have good genes or something.
I hope it goes well and she's feeling better soon.

I can't see the photo here at work, but I know how painful ingrown toenails are! Poor little sugar. I had to have a portion of my toenail removed a couple years ago. The worst part is the numbing injection. Once it takes effect, you can't feel a thing. If I were you, I'd give it a shot (no pun intended lol) in the doctors office. Its pretty quick and simple and won't require anesthesia. Just my opinion, though.

Oh my Lord, poor baby! And what is up with the doctor or whoever said they will not be giving her medication to calm her. WTH?????? Kassi had major eye surgery when she was 2. They gave her some valium or something and she giggled the whole say to surgery. Actually, I was the one that needed the valium..lol...but still. That's just plain stupid. They can give her something.

Hope everything goes alright, I'll say a little prayer for the family (((HUGS)))

poor baby! i can't believe they won't sedate here! there's no way a small child will remain calm when they're poking her toe with needles and removing her nail! i would go the surgery route myself. but i'm a big baby, lol. i tear up when my kids cry from getting their immunizations :D

oh poor baby girl!! 4 years ago i had both of my great toes done on both sides. i got ingrowns after one bad trimming of my nails when i was preggo with maddie. :( they are so painful and my heart goes out to her! having the surgery would be a sure fire way to get her back to normal! prayers and hugs to you and naomi!! i'm so sorry she is hurting.

YUCK! I've had ingrown toenails before and they never got that bad. I agree the soaking thing would hurt. I mean surgery other than outpatient seems pretty extreme for a toenail. Poor little baby.

our family has a history of ingrown toenails. Three of my boys have had theirs removed, and I've had several toes done myself. I had mine done during surgery on my feet for other things, but my boys have had to sit in the chair and have it done. They were all teens when they had it done, and I can NOT imagine a child sitting through it without sedation.

Have they not been having you soak it in a betadyne solution 3 times a day? If you haven't, right now, go get some at the pharmacy (I always have the generic one on hand), put 1 T in a pan of as hot of water as she can take, and soak it for a good ten minutes...longer is better. Do it three times a day. One of my boys had problems after his, and we had to soak it with several rounds of different antibiotics.

Oh the poor little thing. I hope they are able to get it taken care of. I had a friend when I was in Elementary school that had to have surgery to remove her in grown toe nail and also my brother in law a few years back. Hopefully she will recover quickly. Poor thing....:( *HUGS*

OMGosh! Poor baby! My middle child gets them ALL the time. She's had five removed. I hope Naomi gets better soon! That is pure pain and I will certainly pray that she gets comfort soon!

Awww! Poor Naomi! Evan and Kyle get ingrown/wacky toenails too so now I know to keep an eye out for them even more! Praying for you all!

Poor baby! I can't believe they won't sedate her. Geesh!!! I had a partial nail removed when I was a teenager because of an ingrown toe nail. The shots hurt worse than the actual removal. :( I hope they get her fixed up quickly and with the least amount of pain!!!!

Oh poor baby! Hope all goes well!

My hubby has had his toenail removed twice b/c of an ingrown toenail. He always tell me I don't trim mine the right way and yet he's the one who always gets them lol.

Ouchie... Poor Naomi.

I have had several ingrown toenails and they hurt soooooooooo bad. I feel so bad for her. Let's hope the doctor can fix it and not cause her any discomfort.

{{hugs}}

Thanks everyone for the P&PT. We just got back from consulting with the surgeon and he was really concerned with the way her whole toe looked. He said he'd never seen it spread so far from the nail bed but that he still felt that removing the nail would stop the infection.

So, she is scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning in Lexington. She will be asleep for the whole thing, he mentioned giving her drinkable Versed and said that would put her to sleep for him to do the rest (inject the local anesthetic and remove the nail). I feel a lot better knowing she won't be awake for the procedure and I'll just be glad when it's over!

I'm glad you at least have a course of action to focus on now Lena. I'll keep sending up those PT's and P's until the procedure is done. :)
