Point and Shoot

I need a new point and shoot to carry around in my purse. Anyone have any recommendations? I would love one that would work in lower light situations better than my current one. ;)

I still really like my Canon G12... DH's uncle has the G13 and as far as I know, really likes it too.

I have a Panasonic Lumix. I wouldn't recommend it for low light or indoor photos. At first I thought it was just the camera, but after breaking it and getting it replaced with a new one, I still don't like my indoor shots with it. It supposedly has all this technology for awesome photos, but I haven't been impressed.

I have a Canon Powershot that I've been carrying in my purse for the last week. I use it when I need zoom (like at a baseball game) and I used it last weekend to take fireworks photos (it has a fireworks setting). It's OK, but I'd still rather just use my iPhone or my good camera.

I have a Nikon P330 (it's probably obsolete now, as they come out with a new model every 6 months). It's point and shoot but also allows you to adjust the shutter speed and aperture. I like that it's compact but still gives me a lot of control over what I take.

That sounds awesome!

So...related question...

How does the I-phone compare to the point and shoot? I have a smart phone, I could use that instead! Do you just use it because it's convenient or because it's pretty good?

Here's the new version. This sounds wonderful. Might be going on my wishlist! :w00t:

I have a Pentax Optio for my small point & shoot. Actually mine broke years ago and I have my dad's. This one is physically breaking down but we have used it for about 7 years (the button to take the photo has been taped down since I inherited it, and now the battery door must be taped closed), I know I'll need to get another soon but as long as it still takes nice photos I'm sticking with it.

I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for something to take photos with low light. But this one is from 2007 so it might be much better in low light. I will look at the newest Pentax when I get a new small point & shoot because I have been quite pleased with what this one has done.

It does look awesome! I wonder if mine has wifi... it has GPS, which is a pretty useless function for me right now, but if I ever get lost, I can take a picture of where I am and potentially find out...

Another function I use a lot... shooting multiple photos by pressing down the shutter. My kids move around a ton so it's essential for me.

On the question of good vs convenient, it depends what phone you have. I used to have a less expensive smartphone, and the photos were pretty terrible. I only used it if I hadn't planned on taking any pictures but a bad photo was preferable to no photo. Then last year I switched to a Samsung Galaxy S4, and the camera is great. It's about equivalent to my point and shoot. It doesn't handle motion (ie, people running) quite as well as my P&S and can't zoom, but it also has less shutter lag and takes clearer pictures. My phone camera has replaced my P&S (except for around water, where I don't want to risk my phone). I also don't use my mirrorless camera as much as I used to, and that's purely a convenience thing. I take out my mirrorless for special events that I want to get the best possible photos of and for planned photoshoots. I use my phone for everything else (so about 2/3 of my pictures).
