Photography classes

Has anyone taken live classes? A friend of mine just got her first SLR and I figured its time to get off my rear and take mine off Auto mode! I know there are a lot of good resources online but I'd rather take an instructor lead actual live class - I just think I'll focus and retain more!

Any recommendations? TIA!

That's what I'm going to school for, photography.

See if your local community college has any classes.

I have never done classes, but I joined Clickin Mom's recently and it's got a wealth of resources, inspiration and tutorials. :)

I have thought about trying to find someone local that does classes sometime though.

I know that local camera stores do classes, too! Wolf Camera, for example...check them out! Our store here gives coupons for classes when you make purchases there (I bought a $100 lens a year ago and got a bunch of class vouchers).

Also - I attended CPR - Creative Photography Retreat - in Dallas last summer. It's one of those conference/seminar things put on by Creating Keepsakes. I went with a girlfriend of mine, we made it a super fun girls weekend and we LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. I learned SO MUCH. I took my camera off auto mode that weekend and it hasn't been back since!

And since then, my girlfriend has been ispired to start her on photography business :)

I don't see a new one listed yet...so maybe they aren't having it this year. I did overhear some of the girls talking about the attendance being down :(

good luck!!

I took a class at our community college and it was a little helpful but not as much as I would have liked it to be. The internet and networking with other photographers has been WAY more helpful than the class.

If you read your camera's manual and visit your camera manufacturer's website for tutorials, you'll be a huge step ahead in the game. Just my two cents...

Good luck!!!

I took classes in college many years ago. I found it helpful to have assignments that work on different things every week.

Jeez, I would love to take an online course, but why are they always so expensive? Hundreds of dollars?

Me too. I have no idea why they are so expensive. You would almost think they would be cheaper. I don't have that kind of money to spend though.

If you really search I think you will find classes in every price range. I spent all last year searching out classes and I took 2 I found that were priced very nice and then I found some that I wanted to take that were a little over $600. The ones I took were great but then you have to realize that some of the ones that are so expensive are led by people who have years and years of experience in the industry and they are offering to give you their time and talent. I do think it all depends on where you are at and where you are wanting to go. Right now I am just a mom with a camera wanting to learn to use it to it's full potential so paying $600 is out of the question but if I ever decided to pursue photography as a career then the mentorship and talent and insight to the business that some of these people have and are willing to share might make that $600 class just what I need. I would just make sure the class was offering exactly what I was looking for and that you read lots of reviews on it. I did take a small class last year that cost $80 for an hour and a half and I was so dissappointed . I came away knowing nothing about what the class what supposed to be teaching!

Here are 2 that I took last year and really enjoyed. The first was around $50 and the second was $98 when I took it. Not sure if they have gone up. I do have a limited amount of free time so I didn't get to participate like I wanted to so I know they would have been even better if I could have given 100%.

Oh Shoot!

What did you think of this one? Anyone else take it and like it? $50, I can handle and its starting next week.

I really liked it. My life got crazy right when I started it so I ran way behind but I have a tons of info that I am making my way through this month. She was very sweet and willing to help you out though.
