My oldest granddaughter, Anna, will be graduating tonight. Right now my heart is heavy with disbelief that I received no invitation to it. Her stepmother said she took care of all that and mine was sent. Funny how my other 2 daughters didn't get one either. Do I have the right to feel the way I do? Since the stepmother doesn't like my daughter, Anna's Mom, although she did get her invite and the stepmother and Anna's Dad raised her.

I'd just call Anna and ask if it's OK that you come and support her. Bypass the stepmother and go direct to the girl. It's her graduation, it should be up to her to have who she wants there.

I'd do the same thing Jacinda said. Go anyway, send a gift anyway - it's about your granddaughter, not the stepmom. Celebrate with your granddaughter!

If it's like the huge graduations around here, there may be a limited number of tickets. But I agree that I would be upset not to be invited and would see if I could participate in some way in celebrating with your granddaughter.

yep just like Jacinda said, but it is the same thing here with "# of seats per family" and we ended up needing 3 extra "tickets" for Sam's graduation and one of her friend's was lucky enough to have those extra tickets for us so our whole family and Sam's grandparents could all go!

Yes, to the limited tickets. We have an extended family situation due to divorces and couldn't have everyone at either of the kids high school graduations. And definitely not at my dd's college graduation.

I'd be super nice and say, "I'm so sorry but I didn't get my invitation, but I would really love to be there to support my granddaughter."

You totally have a right to have your feelings hurt, but the relationship with your granddaughter is what's most important. Since she needs to have a healthy relationship with her stepmom, I wouldn't be all like, "That lady didn't invite me!" EVEN THOUGH I WOULD WANT TO!

Here the seating is not at all limited because the ceremonies are held in big concert arenas like the Amway Arena in Orlando. So there are technically no invitations unless the family sends them out because you just kinda show up and find somewhere to sit. So maybe that is the case for your family's situation as well? We just sent out announcements which served as invites I guess. But basically told people if they wanted to come it was fine but chances were good we would not be able to sit together. I dont know how it is in other areas as my daughter's high school graduating class was one of the largest in Orlando. Her school had I believe over 5000 students...anyhow we had the hurt feelings too until I explained that there were not really any limits to who could come but if they wanted to sit with us they needed to meet us there. We ended up all going in one vehicle though and met the extended family at the ceremony. I hope you can get it straightened out...I understand the hurt feelings but I think that there is probably no ill intentions behind it. Graduation time is so hectic and crazy. I know we did not send out the announcements to every person who came to our daughters some of them I invited personally by calling them. I would think that being her grandmother you would be welcome to go though so long as seating is not limited like others have mentioned.

Yup. This exactly.

Thank you all for your support. I wound up with a terrible headache and didn't go. The stepmom did send an invitation but it was returned to her. She put the wrong address on it. Now I feel bad because I didn't go. But she could have at least told me. She gave the invite to my daughter last night at the ceremony. Lessons learned on my part.
