I want to pick your brain. Or DH's. Whichever.
He does photography right? Is it a hobby or does he do shoots in his spare time (I know he's a mountie too, lol).

I've been really practicing my photography lately. I've done some informal shoots with my girlfriend and her baby and gotten some really good feedback. One of the girls even suggested I start doing portraits and pet shoots on the side.

But I want to know more about that kinda stuff before I get too excited about it, lol. I know I'll need backdrops, a tripod, a speedlite. But really, I was just looking for a little insight into what your DH does and if either of you has any tips

Right now, we don't have sort of "portrait" taking stuff, though it is something I am really craving to do. He bought me an XT to practice with, but I just haven't.

He does have a Speedlight, and I LOVE that thing. You definitely need that LOL! He has the 430, but he wants the 580EX, so that's on the Christmas list I think. He also has a tripod, he says its really good for things that haven't got great lighting (since you need to leave the shutter open longer, there is more chance it will be blurry). We just have a cheapie tripod right now, but it works great so far.

I am thinking about asking Santa for some photo gear for Christmas, I want some backdrops, and I also want some Alien Bees (lighting). As for the Speedlight, I'm planning to buy him the new one, and then he'll hand-me-down the one he has now LOL

I'm thinking of just going to Joann's and getting a few yards of some fabrics to use as backdrops. Go the cheap route and save for a speedlight and tripod and remote, etc etc etc

Col, have you checked out the I Love Photography website? that's where a lot of new photographers get their start. I had my own photography biz for several years but have stopped for the time being -- I was not loving the business part of it and it was sucking the joy out of photography for me.

Yea, I'm really loving photography as a hobby, so hopefully if I end up going this route, I won't lose that enthusiasm. I love the post processing and seeing what I can make from a so so sooc.
