Online backup sites?

So yesterdays house fire got me thinking. If I lost my house, my possesions mean nothing to me. As long as my family was safe, everything else can burn. The only thing I would be devestated about losing would be my photos, scrapbooks, and I wouldn't be *devestated*, but very upset over losing my purchased kits.

So I think that there's been mention of online system back-up sites for a small monthly fee? Was it Mozy or something like that? I haven't been reading them, because I didn't feel they were a necessary expense, but I've since changed my mind.

Help would be appreciated. Also any hints, tips/tricks, other suggestions would be helpful too! TIA!

It's easy to use? Does it send reminders? Does it take very long to do, or is it very complicated? Does it just erase your old backup and replace it with the fresh information?

Tell me more!

Mozy can either automatically update, or update when you tell it to.

I'm thinking about starting with Mozy. Jordan says it's a waste of time but I'm getting worried about space issues now that I'm shooting RAW.

I have Mozy too. Unlimited space. Yes, it will remind you or you can set auto backups. I believe it just adds new stuff to your older backups. You can run it off of your actual HD, your EHD or both (I'm pretty sure).

I back up all my photos, my pages and my kits along with some other personal information that we can't lose.

Plus, I also back up everything to DVD and put them in our fireproof safe once a month.

I got mozy like 3 weeks ago and has worked perfect until saturday or yesterday... now it just sits at the connecting to backup service screen... Im utterly sad because I cant get it to go back to uploading like it was doing so well!! i dont know if its because i have vista?? anyone else have this issue?? moxy is the only one that i have heard of and if its just a fluke that its not working right i would say mozy is the way to go

I use carbonite. But if you have an EHD it won't back that up (I don't so it works fine for me). I've never had any issues. I accidentally deleted a couple files one time and was able to restore them (they had already been deleted from the recycle bin) really quickly.

I have Mozy and Vista without any problems. Depending on how much stuff you have to back up, it can take a long time. I've been backing up via Mozy for 3-4 months and I'm at 337.48GB right now. I think I have about another 100GB left. But I only have it run at night while I'm sleeping or if there is no activity on my computer because it can slow down your computer some. I love the peace of mind about having this backup. I had a hard drive failure over the summer and I had to pay $1800 to have all my data restored, or I would have lost all my pictures. So, spending $5 a month is a BARGAIN. Seriously.

I have Carbonite-which has been working great for me. I am signing up with Mozy because it backs up your EHDs too. I am a total nut and want my pics backed up in 2 places. My laptop just died(water+laptop=death:().

I also have started to madly write files to DVD. A friend of mine makes 3 DVDs for back ups. He keeps one handy, one in safe deposit box and the other one, he stores at his mom's house.

There are coupons online so do a search first. I found a 10% coupon code: JANUARY and a 15% off coupon from Mozy through E-Bay. The Ebay coupon (EBAY15) may need to be clicked through a certain link, so, do a search and PM me if you can't find them and I am sure I can find them again.

My DH was looking around and we can get 25GB free backup space through Windows Live... I know its not a lot of space, but I don't think I'll fill it all up yet. Anybody know if this works?

Jae, for your photos, we have unlimited space on our family Fotki account. I told Tara to backup on there too, but obviously I haven't taken my own advice about that, either...lol!

Ok, that's it for me, I'm signing up for Mozy tonight. 2 years with 3 months free plus 15% off is pure peace of mind for $88.36!! That's incredible!

I'm trying to try out Mozys free 2GB of storage, just to see how long it takes to back up that much stuff & how it effects my internet connection while doing it.

I don't have the most ripping fast connection, it's low end speed broadband & my husband is of the opinion that my initial upload will 1. take months and 2. drag our surfing to halt while doing it. So far I can't connect to Mozy to even start, it hangs up during the initial connection. I don't know if that is me or them.

I want it to work. I like the idea, but so far I'm getting no joy. :(

Yeah, I've been meaning to do that, but I need another site to back up our other files as well, and all my scrapbook stuff.

Stacey, do your backups overnight so that it won't affect your normal surfing.

ETA:I just realized we only have a certain amount of space per month with comcast that we can use to upload. Crap. :(

I'm using Mozy and it is slowly backing up my stuff.

The only thing that I have noticed is when I'm viewing my Netflix instant movies on the xbox, I get really poor quality unless I turn off Mozy. But otherwise, I haven't noticed it running on my computer. I just checked to make sure it was still on!

do you mean the 250gb bandwidth cap?

Yes. But when I asked Jordan he convinced me to just use a special backup tape that he has available at work. So no need for Mozy after all. He REALLY doesn't want my/our stuff online somewhere.

I was thinking that too... I wouldn't want to have all my stuff online when their servers got hacked and they have all my banking information. Maybe I should just back it all up on discs and put them in a safety deposit box at the bank, lol!

My husband is insane that way too. He doesn't like the idea that other people 'have our stuff'. So I mail photo DVDs to my parents twice a year as my photo back up & just hope my EHD doesn't fail the same time my HD does. He says he can do some sort of back up at his work but he'd have to take my laptop in and I know him.... he'll get distracted when he gets there, start the back up at 3pm, not be finished when it is time to leave, be unable to stop in mid back up so he'll leave it there. Then one of his coworkers will restart the server for some reason at 10pm, not realizing there is a back up going & DH won't notice the fail until around 2pm the next day and then the whole process will start onver again & I'll see my laptop in a week.
