One more Kindle question...

I know there have been eleventy bajillion Kindle threads and honestly this may have been answered before...but forgive me because I'm tired and lazy all at once today.

So I was thinking the other night about what I would like to use my Kindle for - I don't see myself needing the extra features of the Fire or the higher level Kindles. I have the basic, $79 Kindle on my wishlist right now, but one thing I would REALLY like to be able to do with my Kindle is pull up a recipe from Pinterest (or wherever on the web) and just follow it directly on the Kindle (rather than my current system of having to print out and then store all the recipes I find online...ugh!). Would the basic Kindle be able to perform this function or should I modify my wishlist? :)
 
ETA: Actually, I'm second-guessing my answer now. Off to research.

That's a great question! I Have had my Kindle for a year and have NEVER ONCE checked out the web browsing, so I'm not sure LOL. But that would be a great thing to be able to follow a recipe. I can't imagine why you couldn't but we'll let the experts weigh in!
 
OK from what I"m reading (my Kindle hasn't arrived yet), there is an experimental web-browser on the Kindle, but it appears to be very 'clunky' and not so easy to use. So it very well may be possible. I'd definitely like to hear the opinions of people who actually have it and have used it. I assume it's probably like a browser on a smart phone... convenient when you NEED something but not necessarily the type of browser you want to spend a lot of time surfing on.
 
Thanks so much for finding that info, Libby!! That method of entering web addresses would make me crazy, I probably should look into the Kindle with the keyboard....haha!! But I wouldn't need much more than that - it certainly wouldn't be a primary web browsing device.
 
welp I just tried it for the first time on my Kindle and it worked fairly well. I wouldn't want to do it though, I'd probably use my iphone instead.
 
I was thinking that same thing, Sara! I'm going with the $99 Kindle Touch, and I just got notice today that it should ship sooner than expected! So, I should have it hopefully sometime next week. YAY!
 
Sara, I'm not sure. I do know my mom will have the fire and the touch in her hands shortly, and will be posting a big review on them at KAppReview.com, so I'd keep an eye out there. She or someone in our company has every version of kindle other than the K1, so we try to have as much info as possible out there.
 
Hey, Sara...I bought my mom the $79 Kindle and it is perfect for reading (she won't be going online or anything). But, if I was going for the Kindle for myself I would go with the $99 Touch because you can navigate around faster than pushing the little arrow buttons. I saw on You Tube that the Touch comes up with a little key board to type things in.
 
K - I've been playing with the web browsing on my Kindle a lot. I have the K3-3G, and web browsing absolutely sucks. Now, whether you want to pay $120+ just to get a good browser but lose the 'readability' function, that's up to you.

Browsing is not what this machine was made for. It's experimental, and you can - but it's hard. It's not intuitive, it takes a lot to load a page (think old dial up on graphic intensive pages back when), and then you have to click around a lot to get to the area of the page you want to be on. It also works in 'fields', so you don't have a mouse-like capability to navigate around the screen - it's like tabbing to every field set up on the browser, and can take a bit to get to an area you want to get to, especially if there are a lot of fields built in.

You can put in your own bookmarks so that you don't have to enter an url each and every time.

You also can't open multiple browser windows - so if you're in Pinterest and want to click on that website to go to the recipe, it doesn't work. If you can read the link, you can try to retype it, etc. It's a pain. Big one :D It's easier to print it off, honestly.

The Touch might be better for navigating a screen, but you still can't open multiple browser windows, so clicking through a link to another website is hard. If there is something in it to open the link in the same window, I haven't found it, yet.
 
I've seen in the Kindle forum that there's a way to get things into Kindle format and on your device by emailing them to yourself using a special kindle email address. Maybe the best solution would be to browse from your computer and then follow the Kindle emailing directions to get it on your Kindle as a document. It may be a clumsy solution (you may have to copy the recipe into a Word doc first) but it would still save you from the print and store problem.

I pre-ordered the Kindle Touch, and I had 2 main reasons for getting it over the $79 version. First, it has audio so it can do text to speech. (I'll use it while scrapping, cooking, and maybe driving). Second, I think I'll use the collections feature a lot (tags to organize your books) and having the touchscreen keyboard will make that easier than using the single button. I didn't want the Kindle Keyboard because I don't think I'll use the keyboard enough to want it taking up space all the time.
