ok mommies out there.. I need suggestions.. :]

lauren grier

you're like stars
without getting into the long details of our day...... I need suggestions - food suggestions etc- to help beef connor up :]

first things first, and obviously most important.. connor is allergic to dairy :] so that eliminates a lot of your standard beefer uppers (including those breakfast drink thingies).

I already do loads of pb.. pb smoothies.. pb on everything.. have since he was 2. obviously that's not helping enough anymore lol. He doesn't each much meat.. chicken 2-3 times a week mebee.. I can try to introduce more meats to him- even though I will be disgusted- but I'm not even sure what to try.

he's pretty easy to please food wise, eats a wide variety of foods, lots of super healthy foods.. I just need to make him porky :]

lol.. I did say without getting into the details of the day haha...

just a long day- long recurring weight issue/other health issues.. blah blah blah.. I'm peevy, and they're spazzing. Had to get a ton of blood work done again today and we're doing weight checks again etc.

I have the same question as Misty. Unless he's fallen off his growth curve, he's more than likely just a little guy. I had to "fatten up" JP when he was a baby, but only because he'd lost an exorbitant amount of weight in a very short period of time. (about 4lbs in less than two weeks with no illness involved, and he was already tiny to begin with) JP was also allergic to dairy (and soy), so he got lots of margarine, pb, avacado, and other healthy fats. He wasn't a huge fan of meat either, so he ate lots of nuts and nut butters (almond, cashew). Fortunately, his weight gain/loss patterns evened out after a while and he went back to a relatively normal diet. Now...he's technically overweight but it's not a big concern since it's simply how he's built.

This site lists several healthy fats on it that you could work into C's diet.

Sorry

If doctors are concerned, they should be able to help you find resources on nutritional options. With his allergy, you may even be able to get a referral for a consultation with a nutritionist. If weight gain is really what you are after, meat products with a high fat content (yuck, but they'll do the trick), nuts, avocado, sports beverages, add dressings to food as much as possible.

ooh thanks for that link ! :]

both my kids are very very very low on the growth chart for weight too. (Simon 14 months, is over 100 % on height and less than 20% for weight... our daughter was the same too, now she's gaining a little more). Im happy our ped isn't alarmed at this, but lots of people question if I feed my kids... *sigh* I'm sorry you have to deal with all this! We're big dairy fans at our house, almost everything includes cheese, so I don't know what to say. Does he like hummas and guacamole? Spreads like that are full of healthy fats and no meat is involved. :)

If you want to feed him some meat but don't want to be grossed out, look for frozen single-serve Tilapia fillets. I had never heard of Tilapia fish either, but my local Costco sells these big bags, and each fish fillet is in a zip-open plastic pouch. 3 minutes in the frying pan with some lemon juice, or spread a little mayo and chives and bake in the oven for like 8 minutes and you're done! NO fishy smell, firm easy to eat fish meat. Lots of healthy fats.

Mmm, tilapia. Devin and JP love tilapia even though they "HATE" fish. We do the frying pan like Lindy, though we do sometimes bread the fish (lightly) before hand. I'm not big on the mayo prep, but we like some other sauces like lemon dill and sesame ginger. Yum!

How about some things that include meat, but that will be easy for you to prepare, like beef/veggie soup or pork & beans. Also, my son won't eat most meat, but he likes salami (go figure) and that's gotta be fattening!

I was JUST about to suggest cream cheese & whatnot, but then I remembered the dairy allergy! I've got nothing then... sorry! I'm useless!

La, just wanted to let you know ... some kids are just tiny. My princess eats meats, fatty foods, some junk food ... and at TEN years old, she is a measly 53 pounds. She loves food, she just doesn't seem to be able to put any weight on her (although she has always been on the lower end of the growth charts). When my mother was younger, she was the same .. heck, she still is somewhat tiny! (she was 104 pounds the day she went into labor with my brother!! 84 pounds not preggo. Just sick I tells ya - size 0 wedding dress!)
of course, my boys are about average, so I can't compare them.

Umm, what about those protein shakes you can make with water or juice? Not sure if they would help or not, wish I knew more, I have the opposite problem!

What about ice cream? Is there ice cream he can have? (I know no dairy, but aren't there other ice creams out there?) You could get the vanilla whey protein powders and mix it with ice cream and chocolate for a shake.

Or veggie burgers? Boca makes a good variety of them. Or if you can tolerate it, regular burgers. They sell them pre-pattied and you could throw them on a forman grill. Minimal yuck meat factor.

whey is milk protein ^_^ he does have an icecream he eats... I should start buying it more.. Thanks girls, really.. I know I didn't give any info- and spazzed on poor misty (haha).. There's a lot more going no than just his weight- otherwise I would just say bugger off dr.. My brother & I were lanky kids, I was expecting that part.. I'm just beyond frustrated with all this crap at this point. Five years.. and we're still fighting this. ><

I started a log this morning, of everything that goes into the kid.. to see if maybe I am just sucking LOL.. Avocado is a really good suggestion too.. I dunnow hy I didn't think about that, and I can mix it with like a fatty dressing or something.

thanks babes :] you rock!

Oops, sorry hon, I didn't realize :(

Poor guy, I hope you figure something out La. For Ce and for your own sanity.

La - with the dairy allergy - is he also allergic to eggs? Scrambled eggs with some soy/goat cheese/sausage would be a good bulker and a fast breakfast (even if you cooked up some sausage once during the week and just tossed it in. Even if he's allergic to dairy, he can have a ton of goat/sheep milk/cheese that can help, as well. That's what we did for our Connor when he was young and we fell in love with some awesome cheeses :)

I didn't read through the thread, so I'm sorry if these suggestions have been made already.

How 'bout Soy Chocolate milk? Maybe those breakfast biscuit things with sausage in them? 'How 'bout corn dogs? I know hot dogs might gross you out, but maybe he'll like them. Chicken nuggets? Does he like nuts? Cashews are higher in fat but not horribly bad for you and they're YUMMY!

And I second Dawn's suggestion about the salami. I buy the Oscar Meyer stuff and the girls just love it. And it's something he can help himself to if he wants a snack.

I am also a vegetarian, but my son is not. I buy him a lot of prepared meat that I don't have to touch all up. Turkey slices, pepperoni, all beef hot dogs, chicken that is already cooked, that kind of thing. I also second the avocado, its one of the best healthy fats that there is. Also get into nuts for every thing, another healthy fat. Mayo, margarine, dressings, all not bad, but good fat. Hope you can beef him up!

I don't know why I didn't think of goat/sheep milk and cheese! JP drank goat milk for a couple years once we found out he was allergic to cow's milk and soy. He wouldn't eat the cheeses, but he loved the milk.

Ack! I have also had to deal with weight gain issues.. it is soo frustrating! Being vegetarian too, the nurse treated me like I was a sucky parent and didn't know how to feed my kids- I took nutrition classes in college, I know what I'm doing thankyouverymuch. It couldn't be the fact that my hubby's family are all stick thin and that is just how my kids are built too.

I try to push lots of protein along with the fats. We do lots of peanut and almond butters, nuts and seeds mixed in stuff, lots of beans, avocados, and soy yogurt/milk/cheese/cream cheese (Silk is the brand with the most fat and protein I have found), and organic eggs. When we were first dealing with it, I would slip in a tsp of olive oil in anything I could- if we were having hot cereal, anything with sauce, etc I would put a tsp of the oil in their individual bowl and stir it up before giving to them.

It can be so frustrating! Hang in there! :) Hope your lil guy is gaining soon!

La. I've had to beef up Jillian all her life. Without the little steps we take each day to sneak in extra calories, the kid would be in serious issues health wise.

1. Olive oil is added to everything. From oatmeal, to pudding to applesauce. A little bit adds lots of calories.
2. Carnation instant breakfast & whole milk. Tons of calories. You can make shakes or just drink it as is. She drinks that for her daily milk.
3. Olives. High in fat and good for you. She eats olives everyday. At least 5 - 10 (you know, one or two hands full!)
4. High Calorie Pudding - Full fat & Sugar Pudding (small Box) plus made with whole milk & 1 package of Carnation instant breakfast + 1 TBSP olive Oil. Mix extremely well. It is very sweet, but VERY VERY high in calories. 1/2 cup = 200 calories.

I have some more information from PDFs from the Children's Hospital that we went to. I am proud to say that J never needs to go back for weight checks & growth checks! :)

PM or email me babe if you need to. I'll get you the other info @ nappy-nap time. :)
