I always try to photo my projects in the morning 'cos I like the bluey quality of the light, and I take multiple shots just in case. Sometimes I retake again and again. I have a cheap little camera so my photos aren't as brilliant as they could be - one day I'll save and get a better camera, but in the meantime I triple check the camera is set for closeups and then rely a lot on the light quality!

This is the same thread I was going to suggest! I just made a lightbox kind of like the one in that thread. Right now I'm trying to figure out why my pics are coming out TOO bright in the box, but it definitely beats the too yellow pics I get (mostly b/c I take them late in the evening/night).
Anyway, lighting is def. the key! Try to take the pics with as much natural light as possible, and without a flash if you can.
If you don't have the space for a lightbox, you could try photographing your stuff in the garden. I've seen a couple hybrid girls do this. Or other places where you could pull some nice detail from the background to complement your work.
