Did you watch it? What did you think?

Loved it, I could totally relate to what he was saying about working class families, the ecomony, and diversity. He made a lot of sense to me. I know he took jabs at McCain but it is an election, and I thought it was well-grounded and not coming out of nowhere.

I'm looking forward to the 1st debate, I haven't been watching it for the last few elections, but what's happened in the DMC really inspired me to get back into the elections again.
 
I didn't catch it.. but I love listening to that man speak. He was here during the primaries and I was SO bummed that I Didn't get to go.I look forward to the debates.
 
I loved it!!!! I really like Obama, and his plans.. I've spent a lot of time on his website reading over everything. I don't think McCain is the right choice, and I'd say that no matter who the dem. was. For one.. I think he's too old.. and for another.. I think putting him in office is just another 4 years of the Bush administration. JMO.
 
I don't like either one of them either Paula. I wish they could scrap this election and start over.

I will however, be watching the debates and see where they start to take their stances on the issues.
 
Loved it! I got to see both him and Hillary speak at our state convention. DH and I were delegates so we had good seats. It was great!

Did you hear about McCain's running mate? A 44 year old woman - the governor of Alaska! Crazy stuff.

Nope, not liking either one. Hubby and I were talking about that last night...I think Obama makes some really good points, but I just don't agree with him on some others. And McCain is sooo...ugh, idk, just not for me. I want a do-over, LOL!
 
Regardless of his politics, he is a great speaker. One of my colleagues in the office is a staunch Republican and I tend to lean Democratic and we both watched it and we both agree he is one of the more eloquent and charismatic speakers out there - very reminiscent of JFK in his style. I don't think McCain is as charismatic nor eloquent, but I still plan to watch his and his new Veep candidate's speeches next week.
After seeing the DNC, I do think Obama did a great job of picking Biden as his Veep candidate. And Biden's son nearly had the whole convention in tears the other night with his little speech.
This is going to be an interesting couple of months.
Paula and Col - that's how I felt about the last election - I didn't care for Bush or Kerry. When I voted I felt like I was trying to pick the lesser of two evils, rather than a better candidate who I believed in. But I feel since I voted, I have the right to complain about whoever is in office, lol.

well I think it's impossible to agree 100% with a candidate. I support obama, but there are def some things that aren't quite align with my way of thinking kwim? I'm not looking for the perfect candidate - they don't exist LOL.
 
I think it's almost always the lesser of two evils. LOL Even this year, and I like Obama.

McCain picked the Gov. of Alaska as his running mate.. and apparently her aides thought she was still at home when she was with McCain... weird.

It's always a choice between the lesser of 2 evils. Last time was easy, I HATED John Kerry, despite agreeing with him on many issues, lol. I just couldn't deal with that man, so bush was the lesser of 2 evils.

This time though.....blegh. Obama has ZERO experience. NONE! His Veep even said that in the fall, and that the office of President is NOT a position for on the job training! Adding Biden as his Veep didn't help change my mind at all. The one with the REAL power, still has no experience. And there's no telling if Obama would even listen to Biden on issues. Don't. Like. It. At. All. LOL! And McCain is just like Bush, and we need a change.

What to do, what to do......

He can deliver a very good SPEECH (and that's all it is, blah, blah, blah, blah) but I do not like Obama at all... And, I really don't care all that much for McCain. However, he will get my vote. A do-over would be nice....

Why is that so crazy? Hilary was running. At least this woman has more experience in politics that Obama does....

She's younger than Obama though.. which is what McCain was criticizing him for recently. I think he made a smart choice though, since I think he's trying to pick up more women voters, and more Hilary supporters.

I think Obama is an egotisitcal weirdy who thinks being elected will give him special powers overnight to change the world and fix whatever mess he thinks Bush got our nation into all on his own. He's also toooo vague about what he'll change...his speeches are full of smoke and mirrors. "hope and change"..."hope and change"...does he ever say anything new? WE ALL WANT HOPE AND CHANGE! How do you plan to do that obama? By raising everyone's taxes by 10% if you make 55K or more? I'll vote for anyone but Obama (well, except Hilary!).

Yes...I am a young hispanic conservative woman...I go against the grain. :D

I won't hate you Nikki, because I feel the exact same way. I can't even stand to listen to him speak. Something about him does NOT set right with me....

Lizzy, I completely agree with you. It's the shadiness of this man. I know it's just politics and it's a shady business anyway, but I don't feel comfortable having him in office. The only person I would feel less comfortable with in office right now would be Hillary.

and I don't hate anyone for having a differing opinion than I do :) I encourage it -- well, sort of LMAO. I enjoy reading/hearing/discussing other people's opinions (well as long as you present yourself/your argument in a clear intelligent way LMAO, I've been just straight yelled at for my views before and it makes me go :huh: LOL) the point being... stand up for what you believe in and be PROUD of your opinions :)

yep! i love all of you (even if you insist on voting obama)! i just love it that we can be ourselves and respect one anothers opinions at the same time.

I will say though that regardless of WHO'S running, if we get another big-money, ancient, no change republican in office I'm moving to Ireland. I have no opinion on either of the new candidates, and I did vote republican last time, so I'm not anti republican..in theory. LOL

I think you can use this same argument for Hillary if she was a man - she would have never gotten this far. (and not picking on Dems). They are both candidates who are filling a niche that's been ignored for so long, so their mere presence gives them a boost that their beliefs/experiences may not live up to, if that makes sense.
 
Well, with the official announcement made about McCain's (when I was writing earlier it was unofficial), I think we can safely say no matter which ticket wins, this will be an historic election! We will either have the first African-American in the Presidential office or the first woman in the VP office.
And Nikki, there is no reason to hate - we are all entitled to our opinions and the great thing about our country is you can voice them and just agree to disagree, lol.
While I really like Obama (and I think I will end up picking him), and I really like what he says, I know enough to be skeptical that he can get all he says he will accomplish done. There are forces outside of every president's control that prevents them from making what they envision a reality. And we have presidents, not dictators, so not everything he wants to see done will get passed - just like not all of Bush's policies have been passed. Even the "best" presidents have done things that were not the best for the country. Some people believe Reagan was a great president, but there was the Iran-Contra affair. Some people think Kennedy was a "great" president, but he is the one to really get us involved with the Vietnam War. Even FDR, with all the good he did getting us out of the Great Depression, had his mistakes. As La said, there is no perfect candidate, and there certainly is no perfect president no matter which way we choose. I think the last time we came close to a "perfect" president was maybe Lincoln? And I don't think everyone would agree on that point.
 
I think one thing that people (yes MOM, I am talking to you) need to realize is that the nominees can make all of these promises of cutting/raising taxes, better healthcare, etc.... However, when it comes down to it, they do not have the power to make changes without the votes of the House of Reps. If I'm correct, there are approximately 595 people between all of the major political offices that actually vote and make changes for us. Thus, you technically cannot hold one person (the President) accountable for the changes or lack thereof.
 
I enjoyed Obama's speech -- he's definitely got my vote. I agree at 72 that McCain is too old to be Prez for 4 long, hard years. Honestly, I think the job takes a ton of energy and enthusiasm to dive in, learn about a million things and try to get things accomplished. I don't see that in McCain.

I don't agree that Obama has "zero experience" -- at least compared with McCain. They are both Senators and have served well in that position. Yes, Obama has not been a Senator for as long as McCain, but before that he was a state senator. I don't see that the length of time serving in the same job necessarily makes you experienced or not experienced -- it has to do with what you put into the job and take away from it.

So, anyhow, Obama was not my first choice of candidate either -- I was a Hillary fan since I applaud her guts, intelligence and the fact that she never gives up. I also don't hate McCain -- but I don't think he's what this weary country needs right now.

I totally agree with that statement Darcy, and I think it sucks. Hillary wasn't ready, and neither is Obama. And it came down to one of them. I wouldn't want to vote for Hillary in the election any more than I want to vote Obama, kwim?

I don't think the country is ready for any of this. They're blinded by the idea of the black president, or the female VP and look how forward thinking we are in this country. Not about the issues and the reality and impact of those issues.

And I'm not saying that everyone who wants to vote for Obama is blinded, not at all. My values are different from anyone else's values, and thus our opinions are all different and that's ok :)
 
For me...McCain's age is nothing but a plus...honestly he doesn't look or act 72 to me and throughout history we've had elderly presidents. I trust my elders :)

His military experience adds a million years to his experience as far as I'm concerned...but hey we're a military family

Totally hear ya hon. Grew up next to west point and have had cadets traipsing through our house for YEARS, lol.

The issue of the war is big for me. It was my deciding factor in the last election, and it'll have a big impact on my decision in this one I think.

that man has been to the deepest parts of hell and back and what he gained from it was a love and respect for his country that i don't think i could ever know. i trust him! period.

I agree 100%.

I also believe that all candidates should have to serve a minimum 4 years in the military to hold the Pres. or VP position.
 
I won't even pretend I know his experience vs McCain's experience, like I said I haven't been paying attention till the DMC this week. I'd catch pieces here and there but not the whole picutre. I don't think it's possible to address everything in the 20 or so min you have to do the speech, so I'm hoping they really get into detail during the debates. But just like how some can't watch him speak, that's how I feel about Bush. I can't listen to him anymore, he doesn't make any sense to me. I think Obama has beat the odds with his background, being raised by a single mom, having to work super hard, putting himself through college, etc that's truly significant to ME. He had to work hard to get where he is.

As far as experience goes, just because he doesn't have any or let's say as much as other candidates, doesn't mean he won't do good. I mean, isn't that why you pick a cabinet - you really can't make all decisions by yourself. You choose people who specialize in certain areas. And who knows - why couldn't Hillary be in his cabinet? He might have plans for her if he wins, we don't know that.

I need a fresh approach, I believe he's the one who'll bring it. Experience or not I don't see that as a show stopper. If you don't try a new approach to solve existing problems - how do you know it's not gonna work?
