NSBR--Appendix question

Does anybody know if the appendix is on a side? My oldest DD has been having bad bad bad "stomach" cramps and a little vommiting this week. I did take her to the dr and they gave her some phenergan but it keeps happening. It's NOT a stomach bug..at least the dr said it wasn't. She had some belly tenderness and I asked about her appendix at the visit but he said it wasn't that (how he knew is beyond me). This is also a new dr for us since we moved kinda far away from her other dr.

Her tummy is hurting below her belly button, an itty bitty bit to the right. She breathes a bit funny while having a spasm or cramp says it's hard to breath.

I'm probably just venting a little more than asking only b/c I know we're not medical professionals, but they had no answers either. Sometimes moms know better anyways lol

It is on the right... and supposedly, if you push on it, the pain hurts worse when you are released the push/pressure... if that makes sense. (i had 2 brothers have their appendix taken out)

I would have it checked out - I had mine taken out when I was 8 and man I still remember the pain. I don't remember vomiting but my stomach hurt like crazy. Just to be safe esp since you said it's been a few days - go get it checked out. I will give you my story so you can see why:

I hated PE and every time we had it I said I was sick so that my mom didn't believe me anymore. I started telling her my stomach hurt and of course, she ignored me until the nuns kept sending me home every day from school. Finally my mom took me to the dr with a warning that I better be sick and then next thing I remember was waking up in a hospital bed - they had to do emergency surgery to take it out as it has ruptured! Yeah my mom kind of let me get away with my "mysterious" illnesses on PE after that. :p

Let us know how it goes ok?

From what I remember... The pain will be generalized at first (usually like a circular area around the belly button) and then will settle to the right.. It will be tender (to the touch and stuff). If you're worried I'd take her to urgent care or something to be checked out.

well..i pressed where she said it hurt and she puked all over me...

I have had it checked out but I think I'll take her to Children's Healthcare and get another opinion

Thanks ladies

I have had to have an emergency opperation to have my appendix out because it had ruptured too (along with a "wonderful" week stay in the hospital). I don't remember cramps or spasms but I do remember it started as a sick stomach and some vomiting then proceded to sharp pain in the lower right side. It can also project the pain to the center or left side too. I couldn't sit up- I remember sitting bent over in the car riding to the Dr because it hurt so bad.

I hope its not your dd's appendix because that is NOT a fun thing to go through! Hope it get better soon! Hugs!

That sounds a lot like my little brother's symptoms when his appendix needed to be removed. He's 6 years younger than me and I was either in high school or college at the time so details are kind of sketchy lol! But I do remember he was pretty sick for a few days before and we all thought he had a stomach bug. It kept getting worse so my Mom and I took him to the minor emergency room one night and they said it was definitely his appendix and they ended up sending him right over to the hospital for surgery. His actually ruptured during surgery as they went in to remove it! They said it was a good thing we took him in when we did!

Hope you can get a second opinion Meg! Maybe it's a good thing baby Teaghan has decided not to make her big entrance quite yet!!

My sister was sick and vomiting for a few days and then woke up one morning in really bad pain. My parents rushed her to the hospital and she had to have emergency surgery as it had ruptured. I would definately get a second opinion.

Oh dear. I didn't realize so much puking could be involved! I feel so bad for both of you! I know with my oldest brother, they went to several different doctors several times before realizing what it was, so I hope someone has the right answer! And hopefully Teaghan holds on a little more!!

No advice, but tons of get well vibes to your little lady! I hope that they can figure out what's bothering her asap!

Hope she's alright!! I never had appendicitis, but from one of my first aid classes what the ladies were saying above about the pain on the side hurting really bad when pressed and released is correct. I also know that the longer it is not treated, the worse the recovery will be, because of the chemicals in the appendix being released with a rupture (same with the spleen, but spleen is worse). Then again, I'm not a nurse. So I'll repeat the above advice from the other ladies...

I got her an urgent care appt at Children's at 3 today..she's asleep right now and wasn't hurting when she fell asleep so hopefully she'll be ok til then. Evidently they are pretty backed up today and I prefer to wait at home than around sick kiddies (esp in my condition..blech)

Good, I'm glad you've got an appointment for her. My dh's appendix ruptured this past fall and he had to have emergency surgery. His pain was off and on too, though, kinda like you're describing. In fact, sitting in the ER before his surgery he was feeling pretty okay.

This isn't anything to play around with. It can be very dangerous if not caught. My husband's was to the point of being dangerous. I'm not trying to scare you, just encourage you to get it taken care of.

I'll say a prayer for you guys.

Sounds like it to me too. I had mine out about 23 years ago but I still remember the pain...I did vomit a few times but I was also NOT at home, I was visiting my (now hubby) at college when the pain started so he called 911 and off to the hospital we went and after all the other tests they ran that is what the problem was...I hope all is well...Just don't go into labor today!!!!!

Meg,
I hope your little girl gets to feeling better soon and you can all get some peace of mind finding out what is wrong with her. It does sound like her appendix. I'll say some prayers and hope everything goes well for all of you.

TY Ladies!! well good news is it's NOT her appendix...bad news is we don't know what it is..

We have a appt/test at a Gastronologist tomorrow. The dr today said she has a severe case of gastritis and prescribed some prevacid, and she wants to rule out a bowel obstruction, hence the appt with another dr tomorrow.

On the upside..after the episode this am, my DD feels fine..even ate a good dinner tonite and so far has no pain (knock on wood..she did take a prevacid)

Well that is good news....I am glad she ate and all is good so far. Good luck with the appt. tomorrow and please keep us informed and let us know how she is......Keeping you guys in my thoughts.

I'm glad it's not her appendix. Hopefully they can figure out exactly what's going on. I have a lot of stomach issues (IBS, reflux, ick) so I know she's miserable. Poor thing. Hugs to your little one Meg!
