NOT POLITICS but truth!!!!

WARNING this is a LONG post but I think it is worth the read....David Letterman at his finest

Letterman wrote this; it's the David we
don't often see...

' As most of you know I am not a President
Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not
about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it
seems to hit the mark
'The other day I was reading Newsweek
magazine and came across some Poll data I found
rather hard to believe. It must be true given
the source, right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67
percent of Americans are unhappy with the
directio n the country is headed and 69 percent of
the country is unhappy with the performance of
the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry
just ain't happy and want a change. So being the
knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What
are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and
running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of
having air conditioning in the summer and heating
in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of
these unhappy folks have a job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk
into a grocery store at any time and see more
food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last
year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our
cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean without having to p resent
identification papers as we move through each
state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean
and safe motels we would find along the way that
can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of
restaurants with varying cuisine from around the
world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck
our car, emergency workers show up and provide
services to help all and even send a helicopter
to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70
percent of Americans who own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that
in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of
trained firefighters will appear in moments and
use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames,
thus saving you, your family, and your
belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one
of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or
prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun
and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you
and your family against attack or loss .

L.. This all in the backdrop of a
neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and
pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where
90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious,
social and political freedoms we enjoy that are
the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks
unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of
ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever
seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet
has a great disdain for its citizens. They see
us for what we are. The most blessed people in
the world who do nothing but complain about what
we don't have, and what we hate about the country
instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the
president who took us into war and has no plan to
get us out? The president who has a measly 31
percent approval rating? Is this the same
president who guided the nation in the dark days
after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to
bring an economy out of recession? Could this
be the same guy who has been called every name in
the book for succeeding in keeping all the
spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist
attacks? The commander in chief of an
all-volunteer army that is out there defending
you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is
on the news or talk show? Did this news affect
you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't
take a look around for yourself and see all the
good things and be glad? Think about
it......are you upset at the President because he
actually caused you personal pain OR is it
because the 'Media' told you he was failing to
kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have
die d for y our freedom. There is currently no
draft in this country. They didn't have to go.
They are able to refuse to go and end up with
either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than
honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a
''dishonorable' ' discharge after a few days in
the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment
in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the
m edia. If it bleeds it leads and they
specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a
car crash with blood and guts How many will
watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The
media knows this and media outlets are for-profit
corporations. They offer what sells, and when
criticized, try to defend their actions by
'justifying' them in one way or another Just ask
why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J.
Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill
his wife, but if he did he would have done it
this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New
York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.
Then start being grateful for all we have as
country. There is exponentially more good than
bad. We are among the most blessed people on
Earth and should thank God several times a day,
or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With
hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud
slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up
the country from one end to another, and with the
threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we
sure this is a good time to take God out of the
Pledge of Allegiance?'

David Letterman

lol, I think most Americans are unhappy about the fact that gas was less than $2 a gallon when Bush took office (among other things). Newsweek actually underestimated Bush's current disapproval rating ... it's lower than that according to recent polls.

fantastic! i love that man.

oh, dang. i just noticed the snopes link. Damn snopes and urban legends ruin everything! lol

While I don't agree with all those points I do agree that we are a nation of spoiled, ungrateful brats :)

I disagree with the premise of the letter. I don't think that being "unhappy" with Bush's performance means that we are all unhappy with our lives or unhappy with America! Bush is not America, he's just ONE GUY.

We could have Mr. Bean in office and we'd all likely still have electricity, but that sure as heck doesn't mean that he would do a good job as president. I think Bush has been a terrible president because he got us into a war under false pretenses, he's dismantled many of our nation's environmental protections and he's pandered to his oil cronies, among other things. Most of the things mentioned in that letter, Bush can neither be credited nor blamed for (firefighter service, good restaurants, etc) -- they were here before him and they will be here after him, but I do blame him for the things that he and his administration were personally responsible for.

I do agree that we are one of the most fortunate countries in the world and that we should all be grateful to live in a prosperous, free society.

Amen Sistah! You took the thoughts out of my head and made them eloquent :)

I think that was my main point too and I should have just listed that but I guess I had to be long winded instead!!!!

It is a good point because sometimes when I focus at what's happening in some of the countries in Africa, I try to imagine how it would be to live in a place where "war" or "rebellions" means purposely hacking off someone else's limbs, raping as many women as you can, stealing and enslaving children to become the next generation of butchers. It's unfathomable that this can be happening somewhere in the world at the same time as I tool down the street to the gym or Starbucks or to pick up the kids from school. We should all be grateful to live here and really to renew our efforts to ensure that our country remains free, safe and prosperous.

 We've totally become a nation of "what have you done for me lately". Not even just with regards to the gov't but employers and communites....

WOWSERS...right on girl!!!!

Totally. I was telling this to a friend the other day but I'm going to share it here too. It's no secret that I became pregnant with my first son very young..well I was an adult but a really young one. Now, I found out I was pregnant the week after I quit my good-paying regular job with a student loan company because I was "bored" (ahhh to be that dumb again). I was so sick my first 5 months I couldn't work if I tried and by the time I was better I was too pregnant to get a job. The year my son was born, we grossed less than 16,000 in income as DH was bouncing around job to job and I wasn't working.

Not once did we go on wefare or accept handouts from the government. The only assistance we got was to cover the healthcare for my pregnancy and a couple months for Karsten after he was born until the insurance through DH's new job (that we had to pay for) came in. We had a wonderful support system of family who sometimes put food on our table, turned our lights back and stuff like that. For that I am thankful. Instead of going on welfare to cover the rest we *gasp* didn't have TV, internet, long distance on our phone or even cell phones. We *faint* did without the things we couldn't afford in an effort to put food on the table with what we did have.

I'm not downing on welfare for ANYONE that needs it. But the attitude of entitlement by some people regarding government handouts disgusts me. No, it's not fair (and this is where I start to go in on the republican side) that people are paid to sit around on their butts and be lazy while the rest of us do without to make ends meet. The attitude that the government should be paying to keep me happy is wrong.

/end soapbox lecture

Thank you for saying that Traci...I am so sick of people using the govt. to sit there and make babies just so they get more money, and in some cases just to keep up with their drug habits...It is just downright sick!!!! I do understand that some people need it and deserve it but I think margin is really low ( I could be totally wrong about that, who knows!!!)

Off subject a bit...I have a brother & SIL who have tried for over 12 years to have a kid and cannot and the people I mentioned above are spitting them out left and right and most of them ( again, not sure just assuming) they end up in foster care....another part of govt that is TOTALLY F'd up!!!

Now I am off my soap box...........................

Woman, I totally feel your pain. And it's such a vicious cycle too. Mom/Dad are pimps/hoes/crack dealers, son/daughter doesn't know the difference, can't escape cuz the system keeps putting them back with their unfit parents, cycle starts all over again.

Baltimore is AWFUL. And after knowing a child and his caregivers who are going through this it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. A little boy who CRIED when he found out his mother was given visitation rights because he doesn't want to be with her or her crack dealing husband. A mother who gave birth to 3 babies who were born addicted, did time twice, and the last time she got him back she was clean for a week before she tied him to a front porch in the ghetto in the city so he wouldn't run away while she went inside and did drugs/turned tricks to get money to get drugs (and sometimes she brought him IN THE ROOM while she turned tricks). Yea, she totally deserves a 5th chance at raising him.

"The system" disgusts me.

I agree with alot of what you guys are saying. But I must say that I would totally be lost without the help of the govt. I am getting assistance from them (healthcare insur. & cash assistance). I am not asshamed to be on it. As I am trying to make the best of my life by being in school and getting an education. But those people you are talking about make it bad for people like me...

It's sad that people abbuse the system like that...

The people like you, Holly, the ones that are using the assistance in the short term WHILE bettering their lives are the ones who deserve it and shouldn't feel ashamed to use it.

Like my mama taught me...

Welfare is like a train..you use it to get where you're going and then get off. You don't just ride around the city on your ass for 5 years!

Yes that is so true...and so many people out there are just riding it forever...it's a sad shame!

The problem isn't just Bush. Congress as a whole has a lower approval rating than he does. I think it's 15% currently.

We, as a country, aren't happy with the whole system. Yet the re-election rate has been running at 90%. As important as the office of the president is, please please pay attention to what your congresspeople are doing in office.

Holly, it is people like you that DESERVE to have this assistance because you are working towards something and not milking it for all you can....I know a few people on it too and I have no problem, if you need it you need it. It the abuse that drives me insane as I said before!!!

Agreed. I don't mind people who need assistance as they actually WORK towards bettering their lives.

I HATE the people like hte woman I know, who pop out kids while in jail, get out, and rinse and repeat. Absolutely disgusting.

LOL! I was going to post this because when I read it about a month ago, it was Jay Leno that said it:)

It is funny you say that because I went back into my previous e-mails and get it from someone else a while back and saw that it was Jay....ooppssss!!! I guess it does go to show you that people will believe anything they read. Besides I really only posted it because of the contents NOT who said it.
