No one lives in the house next door...

...and last night two dogs started barking like crazy. I didnt put it together at first but they barked ALLL gosh darn night long and when I got up to take Katie to school this morning this little yipper dog comes running at us snarling and im shooing it and trying to scare it while I'm telling Katie to hurry and get in the car.

So I get back and the dogs are still there, one big dog behind the house next door's gate and the psycho little yippy dog running around loose. They were obviously left there which is why they were barking all night but what would you do. I think loose, crazed dogs are scary but I dont wanna piss any owners off either.

So what would you do? Should I call animal control to come pick them up or should I leave them longer and see if someone comes back for them later? It was like after 1am when they started barking so they were dropped off in the middle of the night. Kinda wierd.

Any thoughts?

I'd calll animal control...if someone left them there at 1am, that's a sign that they don't want them anymore - especially if it's an abandoned house (or, not lived in at least). Because if they DID want them and just wanted to be away from them for a few days...you don't take them to an empty house...that's just crazy.

I'm with Bree. I'd call animal control. If the owners do come back, they can go explain themselves to AC.

call animal control... they will try to contact the owners & give them 24 hours before they just go nab the doggies

OH and yeah...since you don't know the dogs or their owners, you can't know what they're like...as in if they'll bite etc...so I'd definitely call because they could put your kids in danger.

Yeah, I'd call too. Plus, they might not know it was you who called if that's a concern. If you heard the dogs, chances are other neighbors did too.

Definitely call. . . that is too weird! and you shouldn't have to listen to their barking all day and night.

I agree with everyone here. I wouldn't care about pissing off the neighbors as much as I'd worry about my child possibly getting hurt by one of them, especially if the little one confronted you.

I feel sorry for the pups....but I agree with everyone else...if they were dumped in the middle of the night, sadly no one is coming back for them :(
I'd make that call too.

I am with everyone else here too, call AC for sure and hopefully something can be done about it!!!!! Good Luck

How long have the owners been gone and who is feeding them? I might call the humane society!

Call Animal Control. They can't tell the owners who made the call and so that gives you anonymity. Its a weird sounding situation and I'd just let AC handle it. Good luck!!

P.S. Next time you go outside, take an empty soda can filled w/ 5-10 coins in it. When the dogs approach you, shake it vigoriously at them and if they don't back off, throw it at them (let it bounce off the ground rather than hitting them directly). And, of course, if they are trying to attack you or the kids, feel free to kick the crap out of them. Dog bites are awful and rabies shots are BEYOND horrifiic.

Yeah, I'd definitely call. Maybe AC can find out the situation and you can get a decent night's sleep without having to hear them bark all night.

Jenny, I'm totally LOL about throwing the soda can and kicking the crap out of them!!! Hehe!

I'm with everyone about AC, you never know....they might be microchipped if they got lost or ran away then they can locate the owners. No sense risking your family's safety waiting for someone to pick them up.

Good luck!

Oh I would be so annoyed at dogs barking at that hour! I'm a light sleeper.

So what did happen?

Soooo. I get back from picking emmie up from school and the driveway has a moving truck in it. Apparently these people dropped their dogs off and left them there overnight while they left to sleep somewhere else. Their english wasnt great but I told them about the little one getting out and they said they would try to make sure they cant get out anymore. Hopefully now that the people will be living there with them, they wont bark all night long. URGH.

Thanks for all the thoughts guys!

Yep, call animal control.
There are stray dogs in our neighbordhood. I've called animal control about 10 times (and so has the lady across the street) and they just refuse to do anything about it. So stupid me ends up feeding them because I feel sorry for them and two of them hang around here all the time. I can't be mean to them (I'm a wimp when it comes to cats and dogs) but they're strays and I haven't been able to chill them out enough to officially make them our pets. You know, collar, leash, go to the vet and get shots, etc...
They love my daughter. Watch her, follow her, play with her......but that's about as far as it goes. I can't seem to get my hands on them for more than a second or two.

Definitely call animal control before you get attached or do something stupid like feed them like I did LOL

I would have offered the same advice. However we found out a few weeks ago when there was a stray around, animal control will not come out at certain times of the night unless the dog is injured or has injured someone. My DH was outside doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing (smoking), and this cop was patrolling. Both the cop and my DH noticed this dog wandering about with no tags. He didn't attack but he wouldn't settle down either. The cop tried to call Animal Control, but they weren't available at that time of night. But he couldn't take the dog back to his place either. So we happened to have a crate which we no longer use, and we crated him there. After I crated him, I noticed blood everywhere coming from one of his paws. I tried to bandage it, but the dog was too nervous and our other dogs were nervous around him, too. So my DH called the cop back and the cop called AC again and since the dog was injured they made a special trip. The cop was actually nice enough to wait around until AC came.
As for the coins (or dried beans) in a can idea, that is a great training technique to get a dog to stop a behaviour or going near something because they hate the loud noise....
