Mason's nickname - how would you spell it?

So who do you agree with?

We tend to call Mason just by the first syllable of his name (we say MAY-sin) including the s. The debate - between John and I - is how would YOU say that would be spelled.

I also call him Masey, but John hates that. lol
 
If I saw Mas spelled, I would pronounce it like mass ... so that's out ... Mase is okay, but I just prefer Mace over Mase for no particular reason :)
 
I voted Mace. How often will you spell it out? If he's planning on going by his nn in school and like spelling it out and stuff on papers I'd probably go Mase.
 
hehe Well, my uncle who recently passed away was named Mason, and we called him "Uncle Mas." My nephew is also Mason , but we just call him Little Mason.

So, my vote was for Mas out of purely sentimental reasons AND because I don't like adding extra letters into a nickname.

Logically though, I'd probably spell it Mase if he were my child, and I didn't have the background of my Uncle Mas.
 
I'm for Mas or Mase (more Mas because I also don't like throwing in a random 'e,' lol) and Mace just bothers me since there is no 'c' in his name, but John says Mace. (He also says as someone named Patricia who goes by Trish I should in no way complain about a 'c' and a 'e.')
 
I voted for Mase. I think you need the e or people will mispronounce it. I think where it gets tricky is that Mace is a "real name" (using the criteria that it's listed on baby name websites), so some people might find it a more natural choice. But I wouldn't change the letter if it were me; I like to stick more closely to the full name. (My oldest is Jason, and we use Jay when we shorten it. If we kept the s sound, I'd use Jase rather than Jace even though the second is more common as a full name.)

I voted Mace, but think Mase is just as fine. Mas makes me think of the Spanish phrase from boxing "no mas" which means no more and just makes me think of defeat.

And my theory is he who does not give birth does not get to question a mother's logic. :D

Oddly enough, I was thinking about my no extra letters rule, and I'm totally fine with Lucas is shortened to Luke. But for some reason Mason to Mace seems all sorts of wrong.

Honestly, I'd probably compromise on Mase, but I think if I were forced to spell it Mace (which is a weapon), I'd probably stick with just calling him Mason. LOL But I'm a brat like that. ;)
 
I voted Mase because Mas would be like a plural of ma. You don't spell his name Macon so why would you spell his nickname Mace?
 
I think you will very rarely ever spell out Mas anyway, so you might as well spell it that way. Mace is not at all right.
 
I voted Mase. But I normally would not think that "Mason" would have an official shorten, except if it's just for family/fun?

And this is one reason we specifically named all our boys with names that don't lend to a nickname. Too confusing and open for error. Ha! ;)
 
I agree that a mace is a weapon. Mase gives you the proper pronunciation, but chances are if he's writin down his nickname, people will already know how it's pronounced, so you can spell it how you want. I voted Mase.
 
As a teacher, Mas is a short a and Mase is a long a (as Kellie said). I'd have to go with Mase. I wouldn't look at it as adding an extra letter but as spelling it phonetically.

Oddly enough, I named my middle daughter with some creative spelling instead of phonetical spelling (before I became a teacher). If I could change it now I would because no one knows how to pronounce it. I've decided it's better to make it so people know how to say it rather than liking how it looks.
 
its weird cause I guess it should just be the name shortened, right? Like Mas for Mason, but when I see Mas, I hear the Spanish word mas for more and would never guess it to sound like Mace. lol Good question!
 
I'd go with Mase also. Mace to me is a weapon and doesn't sit well with me. I also feel funny changing letters but I know that is kind of silly because some traditional nicknames do change letters like Lucas to Luke as mentioned. However, it bugs me when people call my Caitrin 'Katie' instead of 'Caity'. LOL Declan sometimes goes by what sounds like deck, but I'd never spell it out that way. I just type Dec. Then again, that is an abbreviation for December so it can get confusing. Sometimes we call him what sounds like 'decks' too and while I've never spelled it out, I'd have to go with Dex on that one just so people got it right. For most purposes, if I shorten it, I just shorten it to 'D' in writing/texting rather than confuse people. As far as school, both of mine go by their full names at this point.
