Need help with TIF files

I'd like to use TIF files instead of PSD files to save memory space, but my computer just doesn't seem to like TIF files. I have a fairly new computer, with lots of memory space, so I'm unsure why TIF templates make scrapping take sooooo long. Even just placing a paper or element takes forever. Anyone know why this is happening? Occasionally photoshop will just crash when I use TIF files.

Help. Is there something I can do to make using TIF files easier?
 
Jacinda - when you're saving your .tif files - are you sure you're doing LZW and Zipped in the options? If you don't make sure to do those, it saves a really big file (most of the times bigger than .psd).

And do you have enough Scratch Disk space dedicated to PS? (Edit>Preferences>Performance
 
Thanks for asking this! My CS5 has been moving soooo slowly lately, an I've started to blame my TIFs. I know my preferences keep resetting themselves as well. Saving them takes the longest.

Saving like this will save smaller files.... BUT it takes a lot longer to save. :thumbdown:

I have similatr problems, Jacinda. To me the annoyance of using TIF's just doesn't outweigh the benefit of scrapping in PSD format. I will happily use up the extra space on my HD to scrap with PSD templates. It's just faster... and I'm not patient. :p

One idea is to scrap in PSD, then (when you're finished) save your layered files as TIF for long-term storage.
 
ROFL it only takes that long when you have a bajillion layers. I never have a problem with the amount of time it takes to save a .tif vs .psd.

LOL! That's my problem. I love CIndy's templates and I use them a lot. One day I was working on a page with a list of top ten and each number included layers for the number itself and the circle it was on and the circle under that. Thirty layers just for the numbers 1-10. I'd been working on it for hours and when I tried to save as a .tif Photoshop thought I was trying to kill it!
 
I use tif files and they take forever to open. I thought it was my laptop. Next time I'm going to open ps I'm going to try a odd and see if it goes quicker! :)
 
Hmmm...I use Cindy's templates too and don't have too hard a time saving them to TIF. Maybe it's a scratch disk thingy as Darcy mentioned.

ETA: Oh wait, I just remembered this lappie has 16GB RAM. Maybe that's it too? :p
 
It must be my scratch disc space. I deleted over 60GB of old files last night, and rearranged some things, then tried working with TIF again. Was much better this time. A lot quicker. Yay! Hopefully it wasn't just a one-off. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help.
