My son got chased...

by a white-tailed deer AND a dog today. Well actually the dog was chasing the deer (a white pittbull) and the deer almost ran my son over while he was mowing the lawn. This is what he is yelling as he runs into the house to get his bb gun.:blink::blink: So my husband and I go running after him to see what the heck he is talking about. Of course I dont want to see a deer killed by a dog but by the time we get back out the dog and deer are both gone. I mean we see the deer occassionally and the dogs are a problem in this neighborhood but this is defenitely the first time ever I heard of the dogs trying to take down the deer.

Those dogs WILL take down livestock. Unfortunately, we know first hand, as I lost our 500lb miniature show horse a couple of years back. Let me tell you, it wasn't pretty and it was a horrible death for our Smokey. Something I hope I never have to witness again.

Tell your son if something like that ever happens again not to worry about the bb gun and just go inside! Glad he is ok.

Oh I know about that. Two dogs next door to my husbands parents took down a cow at the dairy farm down the road from us. The guy who owns it/works it (not sure which he is) shot one but the other got away. The one who got away was the "alpha" or leader of the two. Animal control confiscated the one who got away but they found the one that was shot and he lived. The people claimed that animal control told them they could keep the dog but I think that is total BS. I dont live there so I told my husbands parents they should call and report that the dog is back. Ive seen what the dogs can do to smaller animals...turtles, armidillos, raccooons, squirrels etc. Id really hate to see the cow or any large livestock after one of them got a hold of it. We have two sheep and some cats outside which is why my son went back outside though. He didnt want them going after the sheep or the cats.

I checked for blood trails where my son said he saw the dog run after the deer and I dont see the deer or any blood and the dog was white so Im pretty sure he did not get the deer which makes me glad but it makes me worry for my sheep a little.

I would still call animal control. People just can't let their dogs run loose like that. A CHILD could get hurt. I hate stupid dog owners.

Yea Kathi Ive called them before. You know what they tell you? Catch the dogs, tie them up and we will come pick them up. Otherwise they wont do anything. We live in a pretty rural area and they dont really do a whole lot out here. I did find the owners though. Right after the dogs came we heard some people outside and it was a neighboring property on the next road over.

really?? wow. we live right on the outskirts of town and our dog ran out the door a few weeks ago and took off. the neighbors called animal control and they immediately came out. we have been threatened with a lawsuit and or a fine if he gets loose again. he's pretty harmless but its still illegal. we don't LET him run; sometimes if my kids don't shut the door and he has gotten out. he's learning now though that he gets in trouble. if my husband had finished our fence we wouldn't be having this problem.

I wish it was like that here sometimes. We have had ducks killed here back when we had ducks when the dogs came in our yard.

Although the people came up and apologized right after it happened. They got the dogs and took them home. We got to talking and I found out the guy works for my nephew's uncle (so it would be my sister's ex-husbands brother). That is small towns for you though...you find out oh yea I know you or know of you if you get to talking.

I HATE when people let their dogs run loose. I was at the park today and half the people that walked through had dogs off their leashes! In a PARK with kids everywhere. The other half had those super long leash things. I just hate that. I also hate when people are walking dogs that are way too big for them, like if that dog took off there was no way that person could hold them back.

I do hate that those things too. Ive never seen these dogs before the whole time we lived here so Im pretty sure it was an accident they got out. The guy assured us he would have them chained or penned from now on when they are outside.

I think that was defenitely a once in a lifetime thing though. I mean we do live in a rural area but for the most part the deer are defenitely bedded down during the day. So for one to run so close to my son basically right up behind him and across the ditch over to the woods was just weird. I honestly thought he was imagining it like it was a big dog but he said no he has been hunting enough it was defenitely a deer.
