do you edit in LR or Photoshop {CS}...I have LR3 and CS5 and I just wonder what most people like to edit in...I like the ease of being able to just flip through the images in LR and edit, but I really like my edits in PS better....if you edit in CS what is your workflow like? I wish I could edit numerous photos at once in CS5, but I haven't been able to figure that out....

I start with everything imported into LR as a DNG.
I selectively edit (and delete the bad apples completely).
Everything that gets edited is exported into a JPG folder.
From there I edit in CS5. I put TRA's "Oh Snap" action on 95% of all my photos, so I open 6 or so images and batch/automate that right off the bat. Then I do the rest of my tweaking. I save these edits as a separate file (I just add -1 to the end of the file name) in the main jpg folder.

so COl you import all your raw file sin LR then go to CS and edit? Do you save your exports from LR as jpegs AND RAW files or do you only save the JPEGS and then edit the JPEGS in CS?

When I still was allowed to use a relative's Lightroom, I did basic editing there when I wanted to scrap the images and then moved on to PS for touch-up. Now I don't have Lightroom anymore and got very used to just edit in PS all the time. But I just downloaded the demo of RadLab, LOVE it and will likely purchase the full version at Black Friday.

Also, I kinda got addicted doing my own "boost" with the curves.

I pull everything from my card (and convert to dng) using Bridge from CS5, then I quickly go through and rate them (well actually just 1 star (delete), 4 star (good but not great yet) and 5 star (yes nailed it)).

Then I just delete all the one stars and open up the rest in ACR.

To edit them (white balance) at once just select them on the side and edit and the edits are applied to the ones selected. Or I edit one and then synchronize the ones I want to apply those edits to.

Then I save them all as jpegs (to be safe and make sure I have a copy before I go to any actions or further edits. I then open them in CS5 and edit further. These edits take longer (removing wrinkles, brightening etc) so I tend to do them in smaller batches. Once they are final edited in PS I save a copy in a separate folder with edit at the end.

I work all in sRGB all the way through and this has worked well for me. Its all about how it works for you though. I just found LR2 fine but not worth the additional money to upgrade to LR3 when I had CS5/ACR already.

I started with LR (and now have LR2), and I never got into ACR. I think I tried ACR with CS2 and wasn't a fan. I got CS5 for Christmas last year (I think? Or maybe my birthday?) so while I'm sure it's improved, I've been using LR for like 3 years now. So my workflow has always been to import and do all my basic edits in LR, export anything that I've edited as a jpg, and then continue my edits in CS5 as a jpg. I don't export RAW/DNG files because I don't go into ACR. And there's no need to export a RAW file because the LR library keeps track of all the edits indefinitely (as long as my catalogue doesn't get deleted or corrupted, lol). I only edit my favorites, or ones that I'm going to use so that I don't waste time. I also like the way LR organizes things, so that's another bonus to me.

In LR I edit for exposure, white balance, blah blah blah. The basic stuff. I pump up my blacks and contrast a touch because that's my style (and then I take it further in CS5 with my actions). I'm very used to the basics panel in LR and I tend to fight with PS when I try and do the same things in there. So for me, it's just easier to do the basics in LR and then play in CS5. I haven't gotten into using presets at all, because I have a ton of actions.

It's just about whatever you're most comfortable with. Every photographers workflow and editing style is different.

I recently started editing in light room and I must say that I love the simolicity of organizing and doing all basic edits right there. But this weekend I did a shoot that required me to do cloning and retouching on nearly every photo. It was such a pain to save them all as jpg, and keep track of which photos I had edited in cs5 and where to put them all. I need a better system for that! I just wish LR had more powerful cloning and masking!

How do you organize your edits?
That's why I save my CS5 edited photos as filename-1.jpg, so I know that that is edit. If I feel like making another edit (different look or feel or action or whatever), I save it as -2. You could also have an "edits" folder, and not save anything into that until you're done with your main edits in PS (so you open up the photo, do your cloning, and only then does it get saved into the edits folder).
You just have to pick something, start it, and stick with it for a bit. Then you can tweak your system to better suit your needs later, kwim? If I didn't have the -1, or a separate edits folder, I have no idea how I would attempt to keep track of something like that.

I do basic editing in LR first and then the fun stuff in CS5... but that's because I have lots of fun actions for PS... but haven't really found any LR presets that I LOVE.

and I totally agree Heather...I have lots of fun actions in CS5....I guess I just need ot bite the bullet and do my baiscs in LR and finish them in CS :)

I use ACR and have considered LR, but I read somewhere that they basically do the same thing and LR was made to be a free-standing product for people who don't have/don't need the full PS and so don't have ACR. I hear a lot about pre-sets and those would be kinda fun to try, though. But, I'm pretty set in my ways and my style!
