Mozy ?s

I started my initial back up last night, after paying for Mozy since MARCH and not starting it LOL. I am doing my laptop and the EHD simultaneously. So I have almost 300 GB to back up. Will I be here for the rest of my life waiting? LOL

Tony's pictures for his photography and all the kids pics are on the EHD (as well as his new PC) and all my scrap stuff is on my lappie. That's why it's so much. It did about 1% in 10 hours last night.

Questions:
1) How long did your initial backup take, and how much did you have?
2) If I turn off the computer or lose power, will it have to start the backup over?
3) I understand that I need the EHD plugged in and on for the back up, but it's ok to take it off in between backups, once the initial backup is complete, right?

Any thing else I should know?

Thanks!

1. My intitial backup took a couple of weeks, but I had way less than 100g (can't remember exactly).

2. Nope, you don't have to restart. If you unplug or turn off the computer, it picks up where you left off again. So my initial back up was with me turning the computer off at least every couple of nights to allow it to "rest." To give you a frame of reference... I just did my weekly backup. This time I had about 2.5g to back up for the week. That took me about 12 hrs.

3. You only have to have the EHD hooked up when the backups are running. For this reason, I've suspended auto backups. I just go in and manually start it every few days.

1 - My initial backup took 2 months. I had a little less than 250gigs to back up - that was absolutely EVERYTHING I had.

2 - When that happens, the backup will stop - but that doesn't mean that you have to start over, you can just start the backup where it stopped (does that make sense?)

3 - Yes, you can remove the EHD at any time (regardless of whether the backup is complete or not). Assuming that you have it setup to automatically backup - if it's not plugged it, it won't backup. If it is plugged in, it will back up.

Nothing else I can think of that you should know... other than to make sure when you sit down at your computer, mozy is backing up. There have been times when things could have been backing up, but mozy was turned off on my computer (not sure if turning it "off" is even an option on a PC, but it is on Mac).

I love mozy, and it really saved my rear 2 weeks ago when my 320gig EHD went ka-put. Good luck!

To clarify here though... if your ehd is not plugged in when it does a backup, Mozy reads that as though you deleted those files, and they'll be removed from their server after a period of time. So, I *only* run my backups when my EHD is hooked up.

I joined mozy and started last night too. I keep all my stuff on an EHD that sits next to my laptop and then do a back to a second EHD that is in our bedroom. I've always wanted to do Mozy but my dh keep saying he's going to get a server system where it backs up for us - but he's been saying that for like 2 years lol. I have a little over 200 gig to back up so it's going to take a while. I'm a little worried about bandwidth since I have comcast and they kind of suck - so we'll see how it goes.

Good clarification! After 90 days, if your EHD is not hooked back up (and mozy can't "see" the files), then mozy says they will delete the files b/c they assume that you have deleted them.

I use to have Mozy, took me a good two and a half months to upload everything, then the next day, the very next day my harddrive gave up the ghost. Along the lines of the EHD if you move a file from one drive to another and change the "path" Mozy thinks you deleted it. Well since I had to get another hardrive that basically changed the path to everything I had just spent 2 months uploading. I gave up then, I didn't want to spend another 2 months reuploading. LOL

Eve wouldn't it have worked to just rename the new drive with the same letter as the old one?

How did it go restoring your stuff - did it take long to get it back?

Don't give up! If you are still interested in using mozy, just redirect the paths (I think you have to name them the same thing, but I'm not 100% sure on that) and it will continue uploading!

I just did this with my new EHD (I name my paths/files the same thing), and it worked like a charm.

It took me several months to do my first backup, which was about 300 GB. It is a little annoying how slow it is, but I guess uploading is always slower than downloading.

I've got my initial backup running now and it says it's going to take 3 weeks 5 days. Unfortunately every time it starts I need to reboot my PC for some reason so it keeps having to start over! At this rate I'll never finish!

I couldn't rename it, can't remember why now, it was awhile ago. I also didn't have to restore because I already had it backed up on an external drive and it was just faster and less hassle to restore it from there. I wish I could remember why I was going to have to upload everything again, there was a reason though! lol

My initial backup when my EHD was hooked up to my DH's laptop was well over 200gb of stuff and it took about 2.5 months to finish. When I got my new PC and moved my EHD over I had to start my backup over again but this time it is going so much faster. It's only been a month and it's over 2/3 of the way done already. Once that initial backup is done the periodic backups go much faster.

MIne have always been pretty fast to backup I think about a week or 2 at the most. I do warn that once my backup started and my ehd was not turned on and it deleted all the files so i had to reupload and it was such a pain.

WOW! How do you peeps have 200 GB of stuff? I only have 35 GB to backup of digi scrap stuff (including my JPEG and PSD pages AND my photos)!!! I'm not a huge shopper though. But I was surprised my stuff didn't take more room since I have over 16,000 digi scrap supplies.
I started uploading to Mozy last night at 7pm, left my computer on over night and it is 17% done.

Wow, that's awesome! You'll be done quick then. I have all of our photos back to 2004 on my computer (I don't trust DVDs for long-term storage), and my pro photos, all saved as layered PSD files. PSD files are HUGE. I am going to start just keeping jpegs of my older/archived client photos after I save the PSDs to disk.
