moving to CA

just wanted to share that we FINALLY got our dates, we'll be moving to Monterey, CA on Feb 12th.

:cursing:***and now I'm venting***
If you're familiar with how the military does things, then you can imagine how much of a mess this was! Backtrack to dh was gone TDY for 4 months, returned in Dec and had to quickly begin his paperwork for orders. Jump ahead to last week, they said they'd rush processing our orders and when dh didn't have them as expected he called for 3 days and kept getting the guys machine with no answer.

Dh finally managed to pick up his orders yesterday and [I'm not kidding] it says we have to be gone by Saturday!!! yes, tomorrow! friggin ridiculous... turns out after dh took the issue to a couple people, the office couldn't believe their own people who knew this date was coming up fast, didn't actually DO or SAY anyhting to dh to get it done that much faster.

Thankfully, dh managed to get us an extension until the soonest the movers could get here, so we're getting everything done as quickly as possible. I swear.... no matter how many times you go through a military move and think you know the drill, they always throw in something new to keep you on your toes.

Oh man...that's insane!! How do you get all of your stuff to the mainland?

Hopefully everything goes as smoothly as possible from here on out!!

they hire movers to come pack everything up for us, box it up into a crate and then they slow boat it over. Same with the truck. The worst part is {and I'm trying not to think about it too much} is that we'll have a house long before we get our stuff. :( the base has loaner furniture and other household items that we can borrow but it is just weird ya know?

I admit that I love not having to pack up all my stuff though. The movers are so thorough, they even pack up your full trashcan and diaper pail!! pahahaha oh I've heard stories...

I've always wanted to just hire a mover...I swear, if we move one more time...I totally am going to do it. DH and I moved at least 15 times in the first 5 years we were married...we've been in this house the longest (almost 4 years now).

Coming from a military family...you know to pack the valuables you want though ourself and take them with you!! Don't let those movers handle them lol they do not take care of things.

oh yeah, we take care of some of the more important stuff, have learned to save boxes for computers and DVD players plus recording serial numbers and taking photos of the big screen, etc.

... and I pack up some of my craft stuff too, especially paints and such that they are 'not allowed to pack'. I do it in a plastic tub and they can't complain.;)

Oh wow, that is SHORT orders!! I am hoping for some advance notice on our next move, not holding out too much hope though. LOL!! I am hoping to know by March where we are headed next. Just a warning, they are having huge problems with the moving companies and thefts. Our last move all of our DVD's were stolen, they never even made the list or the truck. Also some of our boxes with electronic equipment were ripped into big time. It is because they write the serial numbers on the boxes and the guys know valuables are in those boxes, ugh!!

Ugh, it can get pretty ridiculous in military stuff. I work full-time guard and my last set of orders weren't entered fast enough (missed the deadline by like 20 minutes) and thus I was paid a week late. They knew for months when it was time to get my new orders ready, but of course, they waited for the last day to work on them. So typical.

I hope your move goes well. We are a military family and have moved about 9 times in 14 years. The shortest notice we got was about 2 weeks or so. Luckily it was before we had the kiddos, so we made it happen with little effort. We just moved cross country this past summer and they were going to make us write every CD and DVD title down. We keep all of them in a notebook type holder, so we just took them with us. Much easier.
Best of luck!

Wow that's short notice!! I hope the move goes smoothly! When we moved to Tx, the company dh was taking the job with pack all our stuff and moved it for us. It was soo nice!
