Moving Help....Advice

....ok after much talking (well a little bit) and not very much planning, I think we are gonna make the move and move back to VA (where my whole family is)....it will be good for my kids, for me, especially for Peyton and overall I will have people I can truly count on with just a phone call......we stayed on the west coast hoping we would have this with Matt's family, but in 10 years it hasn't really happened.....

this was actually Matt;s idea a few months ago, but just recently and after spending a week at home with the kids, I think it is best for all of us....we need to have more "space" and I think I am really homesick as well......Matt's parents live 5 hours away and they have been to stay with us twice in 10 years (once when we moved in to help us paint and get situated) and for Sam's graduation in 2011...I know my family would come visit much more often, or we would be close enough to go visit for the day....

so on that note, I have NO IDEA where to even start...we are in debt (and honestly that isn't going away anytime soon), we own our house (so we would have to sell it) and my aunt already said that VA Tech medical center has amazing resources for Peyton (Asperger's) and they have lots of school that specialize teaching kids with Autism in the area.....

I am not really worried about the kids adjusting too much, cause honestly they are military brats and they adjust really well.....so help a girl out.....

where do we start?

trying to sell our house?
finding a job first?
finding schools for the kids first? looking for a place to live out there first?
....just not even sure......

I'd start jobhunting first, and look at what its going to take to get your house on the market. You'll find schools based on where you end up living, and you can always rent somewhere for a few months until you find a new place in VA.

Yep - I'd do job hunting first too. I don't know how it is where you live, but around here houses are selling really fast. Our next door neighbors sold their house last month in 4 days. The family across the street sold in two weeks. So, I would work on getting employment lined up before you list the house.

Good luck, Angie. And, good for you for doing something big and hard but that is best for your family. HUGS!

and BTW, don't get me wrong I LOVE my in laws, but there just seems to be some favoritism with Matt's 2 brothers families and we both see it and recognize it....

luckily being retired military I have a pretty good resume and I currently work for the VA (dept of veterans affairs) and Matt has lots of different work experiences to go off as well......I just figure if we can get a plan going and just start working towards it, hopefully within a year we can be there for good.....

eta: and if it really works out like planned, I would LOVE to be able to home school Peyton for a couple of years if I can't find what he needs in the school systems there......

I'll send you a PM in a moment. I don't know where in VA your family is, but I've been very happy with Ben's autism services through the public schools here, and there are lots of good therapists and doctors. I'd start with identifying a general area of the state that you're interested in and then do as others suggested and start with a job search.

Eeeeeeeeee! :w00t:

:o Sorry... just had to squeal a tiny bit. :D

I am excited for you! Just pray, pray, pray. Like the others have said, the job comes first. It can't hurt to have a Realtor come by asap and give you some pointers on what you might need to do to make your house as sell-able as possible, etc.

Brook a couple of things you said last time I was talking about Peyton, just kind of keep popping up in my head :)

So happy for you on your big decision.

Only thing I would add, is if you think you would be able to get help from your family would be to try to locate as close to them as possible. It just makes it easier if a multiple hour commute isn't a part of the equation. And if they seem willing to help, living closer will make it easier for them to offer.

Sending good wishes.
