Macbook - Air or Pro? Anyone use Air?

My Macbook is dying a slow and horrible death ... I know I need to replace it, and I've been delaying - for at least a couple years now - because, ouch $$$$

That said - anyone use a MacBook Air with an M chip (any M chip - I'm still on an Intel Chip) and have success running Photoshop/Creative Cloud apps? I mainly use Photoshop, and some Lightroom.

Otherwise I really only use my laptop for Photos (the included Mac app that syncs to my phone), and Chrome.

I *really* want a Pro ... but if an Air will work, it might be a way to get through a few years without paying so much at the moment, as they're more budget friendly.

Thoughts?

My MacBook Air is still on Intel chip, so I can't really say... I hope you can find what's best for you, Trina.

I don't have any experience scrapping on an Air (my boys have airs, but they just use them for school).

Before investing in a new machine, it might be worthwhile to check with places in your area that could refurbish your current machine. I mentioned this in another thread, but updating your OS will always degrade performance on older machines, so I would be super cautious about making updates unless there are features you can't live without (which is almost never the case). My machine is a 2020, and it's not perfect, but I'm on Sonoma and won't upgrade for that reason. I would also look at clearing out anything that you don't need that's consuming memory.

Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you! It's always sucky when you see your computer is dying a slow death!

I've been doing a little research on the air vs pro. (I'm coming from an old HP laptop but I love my Mac Desktop)
Both will support lightroom and photoshop. I would love the 16 inch screen on the pro and the air now has a 15 inch screen so thats not bad, but i am leaning towards the pro.... the Air does not have a fan and somewhere online I read that there are issues with it not lasting as long as the Pro because of the fan. So what I would like is the Pro 16 inch with 1 tb ssd. It may take me a bit to save up for it.

Ok so I bit the bullet and ordered a 2024 Air, with 24 GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I talked to the guy at BestBuy and he said unless I'm doing heavy video rendering, the Air should be just fine and about 10x faster with the M4 chip over my current Intel version. I asked about the fan and he said in 5-6 years it might be a bigger deal (with new OS it can make it slower), but I'm usually pretty happy if I can get 5 years out of it, so I'll be looking to get a new one then too. Plus they price matched the Education discount and gave me the service plan for half price ... and it was $1500 less than the Pro with the same specs ... so I'm taking the chance!

Oh yay! Its good to know that the fan won't be an issue for 5 years or so! Maybe I will be alright with an Air..... Congrats on your new Air!
