Lightroom won't display previews?

Oh that would be so frustrating! You can't even function without the preview!
Does it happen if you start IN Lightroom and import the files from there?
I have not had that happen to me and I am sure you have researched but here is one person that has a list of things to try... maybe one of them will work for you? What worked for her was deleting everything in her windows TEMP files... maybe since you use a MAC is there something equivalent to that?
Here is her list of suggestions to try but hopefully it doesn't take this many trials.

- restarting LR/computer
- formatting or changing the memory card,
- checking for/removing video files on the memory card,
- changing user permissions of the import catalogue,
- purging LR cache,
- freeing additional space on HDD,
- resetting LR preferences to default,
- creating fresh LR catalogue,
- finally reinstalling the whole LR,
- installing newest version of Camera RAW.
