Lets talk finances.

I'm the finance person in our house. DH knows everything... we talk about big purchases.

We weren't always good with our money... but Dave Ramsey helped... and at the same time - we grew up. We lost a lot from the sale of our previous condo... but made out ok in the long run because we had been working together and learned a lot.

We are big Dave Ramsey fans here too! We just got serious last August after school started. We are working on our last bill (van payment) before our mortgage. We got rid of a lot of debt in a short amount of time by really buckling down and taking Dave's advice to heart. :)

Here it is 100% a joint effort. We both make all of the decisions together.

My answer was solely the everyday business of handling the finances, savings, bills, and investments and figuring out a budget. Not the overall decisions about our money. Now that you mention this, Sherri, I have to add that I definitely have a part in that end of things, we discuss everything and make all decisions together also. :) I think it's important.

We both budget and have separate accounts. We split the monthly bills in half and each of us pay our shares. For huge purchases, we discuss who saves what and how much we need.

I am pretty bossy and need to keep up with balances to have peace of mind (the control freak side of me..lol!) so I handle all the finances. We discuss big purchases, but in the end...if I don't like the sound of it, it does not happen. I love to shop but he does more impulse buys than I. I have to research and determine the pros/cons of everything.

We both do, but not really. Budget that is.
I mean we don't live beyond our means but at the same time we don't have a X$ for this and Y$ for groceries and such. We probably could have more in savings if we did and I didn't depression shop (not clinical or anything but living overseas you get down sometimes) and such.

I used to be the "good one" to save and not spend money, but now later after the boys I do buy things more than I should. Again, we are fine financially, have money in savings, have a good sized down payment sitting in a CD in the bank for when we get ready to buy a home again, no loans and all that. But when I look at our CC statement I do get a little sick.

But DH doesn't notice any of this because he only handles some of the bills and such and its all so random here (mostly cash) for local bills.

I am hoping when we get back to the USA (or next assignment) we will be able to better track our/my spending. Here its one of those, if you see it buy it because it might be gone later deals. It really is. We went 4 months without coffee creamer here. Momma has to have her coffeemate!

But we are blessed to be here with the Embassy so we can get mail here. so that helps. Just it makes it "easy" to press the buy button on Amazon! OR here at SSD!!

I am the one in my house who sets up our budget and plans our money, though with John on commission that isn't exactly an easy task which is why it threw us into such a tailspin when I lost my job even though it only brought in a little over $100/week.
Anyway his commission makes our budget more loose than I'd like, it makes me twitchy - I need to know where every single penny goes. But we *cough*I*cough* found that if he deposits half his check and only use the other half for groceries, gas, and extras we do good.

Now ask me how often he actually follows that.

We both take care of it. He worries about our investments because he's done a lot of research on them, but he informs me about all of them and why he chose that way. We both pay bills...there is no order but we both take turns depending on who happens to remember or check the mail on the day of the last bill. We love Dave Ramsey and set up our budget. We always have a slush fund that comes when we get 3 paychecks a month and that's where a lot of our big purchases come from or of we go over on groceries one month or something. We seriously go through phases. Lately he's been more on top of the budget than I, but I've done a lot as well. We love the financial freedom that sticking to a budget gives us. We may go without some things, but it's totally worth it.

Definitely! I have a few friends who are struggling right now because that doesn't happen in their homes. That is why I felt the need to word things like that.

Anyway, we both sit down together and decide on every budget line. The bills are ALL paid through direct debit, automatic payments, etc. We don't have a single bill that we have to go and pay or set up a bill pay for, etc. Therefore, neither of us actually 'pay' the bills as they are already all set up. Groceries are my area, gasoline is his, etc. We do it all together. His check (and during the school year, my check) are both direct deposited as well, so neither of us ever see cash.

The few times we've tried doing it differently, it didn't work for us so well. I like that both of us know, at all times, exactly where we stand, how much is in checking, savings, credit union, etc. Heck, he even has a PayPal debit on my PP account and knows what is in there and can use it as he needs. That's from my design income...

He makes the money. I spend it. :)

I work up the budget(such as it is), I pay the bills & manage the bill pay accounts as needed (stupid mortgage company sold our loan last month & I've had to make numerous calls to sort out what payment went where when), I buy most of the stuff - groceries, clothes, kid activities, etc. If he wants to buy something outside the usual, like parts for his car or lumber for some project he asks me if we can afford it or how much we have to set aside toward it until we can afford it. He checks out the joint account online so he knows how much we have but he doesn't know if I have that money earmarked for something so he has to ask me about it before he spends any of it. If we have extra $$ at the end of the month we talk about what to do with it together but mostly I call the shots with the money.

We both get an 'allowance' every month that gets transferred into our personal accounts that we can spend without needing to check with the other. That's where my scrapping money comes from.

We do it together. If I do pay something without him around I always inform him that I paid it. We both check our accounts often so we're both very aware of where all the money goes.

Me. Ain't no one to split it with. ;)

Honestly, I will never again share money completely. Been burned too bad in the past.
