Let's talk about BACKING UP FILES...

My second external HD went down yesterday, and I nearly had heart failure. The last time I backed up to DVD was 8 weeks ago, and I haven't regularly been backing up to my mozy.com account. :unsure:

Thankfully, I hooked my external HD straight up (internally) to a PC and am recovering everything. WHEW!

So now I need to come up with a new plan for storage/backing up and figured this would be something good to discuss here. Sooo....

1. If you use an external HD for storage, which one do you have? And how much space is it? Have you ever had any problems with it?

2. Do you use your EHD as your backup? If so, do you backup your EHD? How?

3. Do you have other forms of backups? If so, what?

4. How often do you back up your files?

If you haven't backed up in awhile, DO IT!!!. I was almost in tears yesterday thinking about all of the stuff I've done in the past 8 weeks that wasn't backed up!!!
 
I have all my stuff on my laptop and also on my EHD. I have not backed up my EHD in probably 3 weeks or so, so I should do that. I also have Mozy, just don't have it going yet for some reason.
 
Oh gosh... I'm SO paranoid. I have two EHDs and Mozy. I back up to Mozy at least once a week (usually more), and I back up to my big EHD about once a month. So if I crash, at most, I'm losing a week's worth of work (though I try to back up more often if I'm doing something that I for sure don't want to lose)
 
I need a better system, I just don't feel like I have time to implement it, lol.

Jordan says Mozy is a waste of money (computer guy) so I'm not doing that. I currently have 1-250GB EHD that has EVERYTHING I've done in the last 15 months. I have my most used stuff, (all CT stuff, all SSD, and a few other favorites) on the server at work as well as on my laptop harddrive at home. A while back I burned just about everything I had onto some DVD's. I NEED to sit down and get my PSD's down to 8x8's and uploaded somewhere so I can get them printed. If the EHD went I'd have most everything I would want EXCEPT the layouts (talk about poor planning).

Maybe on sunday I'll work on my LO's and get a cd burned of them, and get htem uploaded somewhere to get printed......I REALLY need to do this.....
 
mozy.com - you should check it out. For less than $5/month, you can set it to backup all of the files on your computer, and external drives. It saves everything to a remote server, and you can access it at any time to do a recovery. It works great, IF YOU USE IT! LOL!

I use it b/c I'm on a mac... I know there are lots of PC online backup sites out there. I highly recommend mozy, though!

It's an online back up service. It basically copies everything on your hard drive (that you tell it to) to a server. You can then access it all via the web, and download anything you might lose. It's $5 a month I believe.
 
I only back up to one EHD. I'd like to get another and store it elsewhere, and backup what I've got. But I guess in the meantime, I should do DVD's...I just...haven't. LOL!
 
One of my EHD's is in constant use as my scrapbook and photo storage drive. My laptop HD is 60GB, so I keep my photos, music, audiobooks & scrap stuff on my 80GB WD Passport. Once a month I back that up to another EHD that used to be my internal HD on my old PC, it is 160GBs. Eight times a year I'll burn my photos & music to DVD. When I have 4GBs of downloaded digi stuff in My Received folder, I'll burn it to DVD and erase it. When I have listened to 4GBs of audiobooks I burn them to DVD.

I can't use Mozy, we have a 15GB a month upload limit and it would take almost 6 months to do the initial backup
 
Well thank you for the reminder. I am backing up to DVD as we speak :) I have two EHDs. one is a Western Digital that I have had for almost 4 years and it has never even hinted at failing on me. Love that baby! I even take it camping with me, lol. It's 250 gig and then I have another 300 gig that a friend GAVE me. LOL he expected it to automatically back his computer up every day and when it didn't he got frustrated and just gave it to me! his loss my gain for sure! I use those to drives and then I try to remember to back to DVD every few weeks but I admit I am pretty bad at that.
 
Oh I have been so bad about not backing up. Everything is on my EHD and if I lost it I would be devestated. I seriously need to go get some new discs and get that done. Glad you were able to save everything.
 
I currently have one EHD (500GB) and got rid of Mozy because it screwed up my computer somehow but our tech guy said not to use it anymore. I ended up putting Norton Ghost on my computer but haven't been using it. I am planning on buying a bigger EHD and storing all my stuff on that but not using it (and of course would only use it if my current one fails).

I have a Seagate 500 gig EHD as well as a Toshiba 250 gig EHD.

I use mine to store all my digi files on. But, I backup everything on it. I backup to DVD weekly.

Yep - I backup to DVD weekly.

4. How often do you back up your files?
Weekly

I know this sounds a bit extreme, but I would rather pay the price for the DVDs than pay the price for having lost precious photos, digi files and LOs.
 
One DVD holds 4.7 gigs of stuff. So, I've been looking through my inventory (I also have a master list of everything) and I can get a LOT of stuff on one DVD.
 
My Received Digi folder is currently at 2.95GB and has 86 zipped downloaded files in it. Most kits here seem to be about 3-4 files and maybe 25 of those 86 are templatesor single download element packs. So I have about 15-20 kits in there (include FWPs)
 
i've been thinking about this all day now!! i don't have anything other than photos back up, to the day. at least i have that done. oye!

you all have me paranoid and rightfully so.

off to buy dvd's!!!
 
so when you back up to DVD's... you are seperating them as to which ones you have already backed up...

like your RCVD folder is where you house your kits, etc until you back them up??

I just got an EHD and haven't put too much on it yet... curious as to how it all works LOL

I DO use mozy and knock on wood I haven't had any trouble...
(why do people say NOT to use them????)

so I had planned on using my EHD as a storage place for all my digi kits and would use it all the time while scrapping ect...

I have been trying to decide what to do w/ my pictures... I have them backed up w/ mozy and upload everything to my smugmug account (I plan on ordering back up DVD's quarterly or so w/ them.... so there would be a back up that way....

ugh... so confusing!!
 
Well,I have Dell Data Safe that backs up things automatically. It's free for now,it came with the package when I got this from QVC. I AM backing up my SSD stuff as we speak though, from my EHD. It's going to take several DVDs just for the things I've got in my ssd folder,lol. Then again, I also keep my challenges in this folder. But still, I can only get about three kits per DVD,lol.
But I'd rather do this than lose them if this ehd would fail (god forbid). It's a Western Digital, 250 and I have a lot of faith in it. But still,better safe than sorry.
 
I use Mozy. I'm not as good about backing up as I should be, and yes, if I didn't back up, my laptop screen would probably not be cracked right now.. but I digress. I love Mozy though.
