LeaPads???

anybody have these for their kids?
what are the pros?
what are the cons?
what games would I need to start with?
how old are your kids?

just a little background....we have 2 Kindles in the house and every game system you can think of, but I want to get Peyton something that isn't quite as expenxive as a DS or Kindle, but yet he feels like he is still "playing" games and learning. He had a Leapster for about 3 years and pretty much wore it out LOL! So I just wonder if this is worth it and will he enjoy it or get bored? Also he is 5 and just recently got diagnosed with ADHD, so his attention span is much better now and he can seem to focus on tasks and learning things alot more than he could a month ago....
 
My son got a Leappad for his 5th birthday and he LOVES it. As far as games, it depends..if your wanting educational there is a writing game that Joshua really loves. I would have to look it up really fast...
 
We have the vtech version (innotab) of the leap pad... J got it last Christmas when he was 4.5... and we got him some Pixar Car games for it. He played with it until this summer... and I don't think he has played with it since... but he is an odd kid - he would rather read a book than play video games. :D
 
does anyone know if there is less visual stimulation with a leappad compared to a nintendo dsi etc? Lucas can't seem to play these sorts of things without sorta going off the handle soon after playing so just curious? He really loves games but we have had to put both the wii and the dsi we own away..
 
Kristin we have the same exact thing with Peyton so we had to start limiting Peyton from playing anything as well.....even though there are educational things for the DS/Wii, PS3, etc....I want this to be more his level....or at least I am hoping...consulting with DH to see what he thinks!

If he already had a Leapster, one thing to check is how many of the games he'd like are different than his Leapster games. I thought about getting Ben a Leappad shortly after they came out, and I decided against it because there was too much game overlap. Hopefully that has changed by now. If so, I'd love to know. Ben is 6.5 now and is tired of his Leapster (they don't make many new games for it anymore), but he can't move on to a DS or tablet because he'd break it the first week. We have a Wii, but he doesn't have the dexterity for it. He mostly plays computer games online right now and looks on with jealousy when Jason plays his DS.
 
We have the old one that held real books. Loved it. You can still get it on Amazon if you are wanting to avoid "screen time" but still have some electronics.
 
Mya has one, but doesn't really use many of her games. She just takes pictures and uses the little drawing program to draw mustaches and stuff on the photos. She thinks it's hilarious. I may try a couple of new games for her this Christmas though.

If you get one, look for a bundle that includes the recharger - the thing goes through batteries like crazy.
 
DD got one for Christmas last year, she had just turned 5. She played with it a lot at first, but now just plays with it in bursts - she'll play with it every day for a week, and then not even ask for it for a month! She really could take or leave it.

DS (4.5) never had any interest at all in it. He couldn't understand why you would even use a stylus (he's been spoiled with ipods, iphones and android tablets!!), and tried to use it with his fingers, and it's just not responsive enough for that. So he got frustrated with that and gave up. Whenever I ask him if he wants to play with it, he says "no.....can I play with your phone though?!".

I'm actually considering getting them a kids tablet between them for Christmas to replace it. I agree with Misty too - if you do get one, get a recharger, or at least get rechargeable batteries, or you'll spend a fortune on batteries!
 
We don't have the pad, we have the leapster, so not sure this is going to be helpful. But, I did want to chime in because I think the leapster was one of our best kid purchases ever. We've had it now for almost 3 years, and it has held up to 5 kids playing with it regularly without having issues at all. The kids love it, there is a nice mix of educational games and just for fun games. I won't hesitate to buy a leappad at all at Christmas time. I love that there are so many more games available for it.
 
Ella has been asking for the InnoTab 2 after seeing the commercials a billion times. They were on sale this weekend at Toysrus for 59.99 compared to 129 for the LeapPad 2 so I picked one up for her birthday. I hope she'll play with it but it'll probably be like everything else...new for a while and then set aside for something else.
 
I'd love to get an actual tablets for my kids to "share" between them, but that cause way too much heartache in our house with 3 kids that might potentially want to play it all the time.....thanks for the input girls....I was leaning towards the leapad because both of my little ones had leapsters and really relaly enjoyed them until they wore them out!
