layoff in the air

There's been rumors for the past several months, but lately you can feel the big L in the air. Slow at work, no one giving a ----. Low morale. Ugh! How can anyone work this way? The latest is they're letting ppl go in July, so we'll see in a couple of months. I wish they'd just tell us so we can start planning! It's not like we have any say in the matter, all the higher ups get to make all the decisions. But at least give us some time to let it sink in and start looking around, then we can be more "ready" to go.
 
Oh man, that's stressful! I'm sorry you have that hanging over your head. I hope everything works out; can't hurt to get your ducks in a row just in case though, right? Soo hoping you won't have to worry about that.
 
I'd start putting feelers out. Just in case. I can't hurt to have a back up.

I hope you don't get laid off though!
 
(((hugs))) We're going through that around here too, at DH's work. He's been there for about 10 years, though, so we're not as worried about layoffs (he says they lay off the single guys first, and ones that haven't been there as long...though the two aren't mutually exclusive). They were saying they'd have more work than they could handle in "3 weeks" (this was at least a month ago), so we're just waiting for that work to come rolling in so the guys can get back to their regular hours!
 
Oh, I am so sorry! I know how bad that sucks! Makes life even more stressful than need be! I would have to agree with the girls about going ahead and putting some feelers out there, see what is available to you and have a plan just in case! I hope it doesn't come to that though! I will be thinking about you!!
 
That's terrible! We've been going through the same stuff at P's work, he sells lumber for a non-existent housing industry...sigh!
 
oh I hate that feeling. Used to go through that in my working days. But ha ha they showed us all by just shutting the entire location down. :thumbdown:

My kids threaten to fire me about every other day (for not giving enough ice cream I guess). I tell them GO AHEAD.

:D OK, that's hilarious! Hmmm, I get the same feeling from my kids sometimes.

I'm updating my resume when (if) I find it. It's so outdated, but I really can't stand working on it. Just like scrapping, I change my mind all the time.

Putting my feelers out - this will be my 2nd time if it does happen. It's different though, didn't have kids the first time so we were able to live off unemployment and DH's disability. *sigh*
 
I feel the same way about our company. They've been laying people off b/c the company isn't doing well (development) which is on top of it being a low morale company to work for in the first place so you can imagine what it's like now.

I've never liked this job (okay, maybe the first 2 months I was here) and I get really depressed every Sunday night when I think about going to work the next day. I look for other jobs all the time...nothing out there. :thumbdown:
 
Ick sorry sweety, I can totally understand why you wouldappreciate fair warning and honeslty I think it would be the right thing to do on their behalf. I hope you find something much better!!
 
I hate when those rumors abound, but I have several suggestions having survived several bouts of those and not yet being let go - I have a great boss for the last nine years who has offered me these suggestions over those years. Number one - do not assist in the spreading of the rumors nor get caught up in the rumor mill and negativity surrounding it. If your boss sees that negativity, it will move you closer to the top of the list to go. Number two - work with positivity and energy - it is infectious and if you're in a position which appears to have info (such as financials or HR) it will make it seem to others that there may really be nothing wrong. Number three - if you do decide to look outside the company for a new job, do NOT mention it to anyone in the company or affiliated with the company (i.e. if your good friend is the wife of one of your co-workers, do not mention it) - it will get around and you will end up on the short-list (this advice from my experience on my prior job where they found out I was looking and guess what...).

That stinks. I got laid off 2 months ago now for the 2nd time in 4 years. It's not fun. I actually had a little bit of a warning so I did start looking before it happened but still haven't found anything. Best of luck to you!
 
Thanks Leslie, I'm gonna try my hardest. We just had one last year, our site wasn't affected, but others had as much as 40% reduction. Our demand is low though so we're anticipating the worst. Meanwhile our CEO makes $13M while stock continues to fall. Helloooo???? Does that make any sense?!
 
I would say dust off the resume just in case...My job is going thru some changes...there was just recently some layoffs to one of the other groups...I'm not sure if it will hit our side but I updated my resume and I'm making sure I have $$$ in the bank just in case because you never get much warning...Heck I worked for Enron back in the day so I know that you can lose your job in a flash...

Sam - hang in there and I sooo agree with everyone else - don't wait for them to announce it - pounce on looking quietly for a new job before everyone who gets laid off starts looking too and you have to compete against them! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!
 
I read the title of this thread as "Layout in the air" and was really confused.

It makes so much more sense now.

I'm sorry. It's so stressful when your livelyhood is on the line. :thumbdown:
 
Thanks for listening everyone, I'm keeping myself busy. I'm taking up other projects and leading some teams so hopefully they look at that and take it under consideration. The job market's pretty bad right now, just a few openings here and there. Sending my resume out to some recruiters, they seem to be on the prowl these days, maybe that will lead somewhere.

It SUCKS! I worked for a huge company that went under about 6 years ago. It was painful, almost like a divorce. It was almost a relief when the offical layoff came. Is your resume up to date?
