It sounds like your hard drive in the laptop is still working though? It's just the motherboard that is fried? If that's the case, you should be able to find someone local who can use a hard drive cord connector and pull the stuff off your hard drive for you.
Can they do that even if the laptop won't turn on?
Interesting! I have never heard of this and will have to look into it. I know that my laptop doesn't have a hard drive but a SSD and I honestly am not sure of the difference. SSD is a “solid state drive” (no moving parts apparently) … there’s likely an option for that type of drive.
