kids and glasses

Both of mine had eye appointments today. One needs glasses one does not. One is upset and one is thrilled. Funny thing is, the one who needs glasses is the one that is beyond excited, the one who doesn't need glasses is really upset about the whole situation.

My just-turned-10 year old daughter is the one who needs glasses. My 6 year old son WANTS them. His eye sight isn't perfect but the correction isn't bad enough to warrant glasses at this point. His vision is spot on where his sister's was a few years ago so if the trend continues he will need glasses in a few years. Of course, by then he probably won't want them.

As I mentioned though, my girl is excited. She was squealing and giddy. It was kind of funny actually. Me, I'm not too excited about it. It is petty and silly but I don't want anything to change how she looks. I don't mind sunglasses and the fake glasses she likes to get but I'm sad to think she'll be wearing glasses all the time now. I know... silly. Its just too much change for this mom right now! I mean, she just turned 10, just got her second ear piercings and now this...

Anyway, she picked some great titanium frames with rimless lenses (the priciest pair in her size too, funny how that happens) and she should have them in a week. She can't wait to have me take pictures to share on facebook so her friends can see. LOL

((Hugs)) Change is hard. Hopefully you'll get used to them on her soon. When my 6 year old got his glasses last year, I didn't think I was going to like glasses on him. Turns out he's so much cuter with them. Now I make him put them on for planned photos if he isn't already wearing them. I remember being excited when I got my glasses at 10, too. By 12 I was begging for contacts, and I didn't wear glasses again until I was in my mid-20's.
