Keeping flies off the porch??!!??

I did Google it, but I wanted to see if my friends here have any suggestions.

I've been sitting on the porch a lot in the mornings while the kids play and the flies are just terrible!!!

Do you have any methods you've used that worked to keep flies away?

I don't have food on the porch, but we do bring drinks outside so we're not running in and out.

We once bought these fly traps and attached one of them to a tree. It did the trick, but I must warn you, it gets full quick and its revolting. Hundreds of dead rancid flies in a bag. It was so disgusting.
They looked like this

We use a bug zapper. We can't sit on our front porch because it's not built that way - but it's dead space, so the flies LOVE to be there, and then get right into the house every time we open the door. It's the only way we can do it. It might be hick..but it keeps our house free of flies, which we care more about lol.

IDK our drinks tend to attract bees more then flies. We generally dont have an issue with flies. When we do I just use fly strips where the flies land on it and they are stuck.

I didn't know bug zappers help with flies. We have horrible june bugs. I mean, horrible. They are HUGE, NASTY bugs! We were talking about getting a bug zapper for that anyway.

Thanks ladies!

ok I have to know what are june bugs? The worst that we get here are deer flies (yellow flies) they tend to bite on your lower half of you body and I am allergic to them.

Oh yea I think I have seen them here. At least something similar anyhow. They fly around our light at night and fly in the house when we open the door.

Yep, mosquitoes are our worst problem. They are pretty much the sole reason we don't go outside to play more often. My daughter and I absolutely get eaten alive, while my husband has no problems with them. Hmph.

Yeah, starting about now we can no longer go outside. Me and my son get eaten up and my husband doesn't either.

Last year was the worst year, they swarmed so bad.

Dude, I'm shuddering from those pics and all this talk of bugs. GET THEM AWAY!!!

Um..sorry about that. Good luck with your fly problem! We've got spiders everywhere. *shudder*

Oh my gosh the mosquitos have been bad this year. It is especially bad because we have a drainage ditch that is huge and until it dries out it is just standing water. Lots of water moccasins and mosquitos

ok...I think I have been looking at the eye candy thread too long! I was quickly scanning the post titles of new posts and for this one I read "Keeping files of porn" :w00t:

Nikki we just moved to OK and those nasty things are every where. How do you get rid of them??? They try to run into my garage when we pull in. They creep me out too.

There's a Mexican food restaurant here that has a large porch, and they have plastic bags filled with water and a penny or two hanging from the beams. Apparently it works. It's cheap, anyway!

in attracting bugs, bug zappers also draw in things that want to eat those bugs, and things that want to eat the things that want to eat the bugs....like snakes....so you might want to reconsider putting one near where you like to sit or where your kids play. We have those nasty June bugs here to, and I just removed scorpion #8 (of 2012) from the wall this morning. Ugh.

Just what I was going to suggest. We were at a friend's house at a lake and they have a covered dock so they hung plastic bags up and no flies were we were sitting. It really works.

The publix down here does it, something about them seeing their reflection and it being large?

This is what we do when we are out with our motorhome. I hang them around awning so they aren't in the covered area and I hang one in the door way as well so they don't come inside the RV. Works like a charm for us!

We've never, ever had that issue in the years we've had one nor in the years I grew up with it.

We also have a lot of flies on our porch. The plastic bags sound interesting! I've never seen it though, and I can't quite picture it...
Are these just regular plastic shopping bags? Haw do you hang them?

Kim when I searched I found this... I'm gonna try it for our back porch if I can figure out where to hook them too. (the pic is linked with instructions)
