Just got off the phone with Rite Aid Corprate

I was nice and cordial and didn't even yell, but I didn't give them the chance to even get a word in edge wise. I basically told them this is what it "is" this is what the label looked like and they didn't even try to remove it or black it out. She gave me a quick speech about how it's state law to leave at least the drugs name and exp date on the bottle and then I quickly shot back that's it's HIPPA law that you NOT give out anyone's private information!!!!

I told them they lost my business and that I have a very big mouth, a blog and access to a ton of scrapping mommas and they ALL know what you did!! That this one "mistake" is rippling through their pond like a tidal wave and it's not a good thing. She then tried to "bribe" me with a GC and I told her that what good would that do....I'm not stepping a foot back in their store and that this "situation" is not about money or gifts....it's about protecting a child that has no idea you are sending his information out your doors to any Joe Smoe!!! :thumbdown:

I also told her that a new policy on dispensing med would be the best thing she can do instead of trying to kiss my butt!!! You don't even fill that type of med till the customer gets to the store anyways so why not wait to stick the label on it till then too. You stick an "empty" bottle in a bag and hang it on your little rack....why not just stick the bottle and label in the bag and then when I come to pick it up slap the label on it and then filler' up!!! She was like....Oh yea that would be a good idea...:blink: Wow so glad your brains got you to the position you are in!!!! :thumbdown:

So I ended the conversation with I was still contacting HIPPA and I was not going to let this get "swept under the rug". So I feel much better about hashing it out with them and will feel even better when I get this reported!!! :thumbup:
 
Right on Elizabeth!! Sounds like you went right up one side and down the other, and good for you for calling her on her bribery. Like a GC is going to get you to calm down about something like this!

What scares me that if its happened once, how many times has it happened in the past???
 
Good for you. Have you considered contacting the child's parents? That may a bit extreme and I'm sure lots would disagree with me, but I'd want to know if my child's name were on that bottle. Plus, that angry mama may join the battle...kwim?
 
Playing devil's advocate here - but perhaps you should have said all this to the local Rite Aid. It wasn't her fault that the people in the pharmacy did that. It could have been some lazy ass pharmacist that did it.

Although, the bribing was a little over the top.

That's Ok Paula..... things do get jumbled when you read ton so threads. But like Sara said I did talk with the actual pharmacy and I also spoke this morning with the pharmacy's district manager. I am also in the process of trying to find emails and physical addresses for "high ups" in the Rite Aid chain of command (my areas regional manager, vice presidents ect...) because I really feel this needs to be brought to the attention of everybody!!!

And Jennifer I would totally want to be contacted if someone else got my info like and would thank them so much but I don't want to get my self in trouble by using their info without their permission. I am hoping that by filing a complaint with HIPPA they will contact this family and it will be done through the proper (legal) channels.
 
I think if there is medication in a bottle, then a label would have to be stuck to the actual bottle, not just in a bag with it. I'd consider the dangers of unlabeled medication to be a bigger concern than this incident, so I really don't think that's a viable option. Not that I'm saying this incident isn't bad but, seriously, think about a pharmacy having any kind of medication in bottles with no labels on them. Being in a bag with the label doesn't cut it, and I don't think it's ever going to happen, nor should it.

I am still very curious as to why a patient's address and phone number needs to be on the Rx label? The short answer is, it doesn't. Is this seriously on all your prescription labels in the US? This info is not on our Rx labels here and never has been in my lifetime. Your name and the prescribing Dr's name go on the label. Your other info is in the computer. Before the age of computers I'd imagine they used a filing system.
 
I'm still flabbergasted that they can give out meds from someone who forgot to pick up their script. Boggles my mind, totally.
And yes, my scripts have my name and phone number on them. Perhaps it's so the pharmacist or clerk can verify that it is indeed the right person or that person's "agent" that's picking up the script.
 
All of my scripts have my name, address and phone number on them too.

I hope the HIPAA people contact the other family!!!

It's really not a big deal to use that medication. It's not like someone bought it and returned it, it's never left the pharmacy. Their costs would be huge if they didn't, and that cost would ultimately get passed on to the consumer.

They verify info on our prescriptions all the time. It's easy to do without that info actually being on the bottle's label.
 
it's not on any of mine and I am in the US. I use Safeway and CVS most of the time and Target occasionally. Possibly it is a regional or pharmacy specific thing. Mine have have my name and my docs on them and that is all.

Well it wouldn't be all prescriptions it would only be medicine that is dispensed in it's "own" (original) container (certain powdered antibiotics, birth control pills, creams that are only available through prescriptions) and all those meds are already labeled from the manufacturer. So there would not be unlabeled mystery drugs floating around.

When I come in to pick up my RX of Amoxil all they would have to do is get my bag (all pharmacy I have been too keep the bags in a bin in alphabetical order or in individual ziplock baggies hanging in alphabetical order) take out my label, see that it says my name and Amoxil on it, look at the bottle see that it says Amoxil on it, slap the label on it and give it too me.

Getting a drug in it's original container is much safer then getting drugs that are taken from one container and put into another container....you really have no idea what you are getting that way!!! You could have been prescribed Zoloft and you might be taking Viagra!!! :D :D :D
 
I also wanted to add that all RX's that I have ever got for me or my kids have always had all our info on it (from Wal Mart, Rite Aid, CVS and Wal Greens), why I have no idea...I guess I just didn't think of it because it's always been that way!!!

Perhaps it would be a good idea to try and get that "norm" changed!?!?!
