Job Dilemma

I got offered a job today...with my former employer (I was layed off at the end of January)...the position is with an entirely different group that I worked with...I know the group and they are pretty cool people...the dilemma is that they offered me less money than I was making before I was layed off...It's not a huge difference but it's significant...Thus my dilemma...I haven't really looked for a job (this job literally fell in my lap) and I know the economy sucks so I'm not really sure how long it will take me to actually get a job once I actually put forth an effort to look for one...unemployment will be ending soon so I'm thinking this salary will be better than no salary....Ok so what do you think...Am I being silly for even thinking this way in this type of economy? I did ask if the salary was negotiable and they did up it a little more...Oh and I talked to someone who works in a similar position with the company in another city and I was told that the salary they offered me was more than she makes...Urgh it's just so difficult! Ok enough of this...sorry it's so long!
 
My husband has been looking for a job for 7 months. So, given that perspective, I'd grab it! It is awesome that they thought so much of you to seek you out for another job! :)
 
It would all be better if this economy were better........DH and I were just discussing this issue last weekend. Everyone tells you to just be thankful that you have a job but, that is so hard to do when you don't get rewarded monetarily for doing a good job.

So, I don't have any suggestions for you sweetie....sorry.....just had a bit of a rant. :p

I think that it's always easier to look for a job when you already have one. So I'd say you take it and you can either keep looking or wait until the economy gets better. But at least in the meantime you have something. That's more than a lot of people can say. :unsure:

I agree totally, I know that I am looking for jobs but if none come my way at least I have a job now
 
totally depends on how bad you need the job? can you afford to NOT have a job until someting you really want falls into your lap? that would be the deiciding factor for me :) good luck in whatever you decide~
 
Yeah I'm leaning toward taking it just because I don't know what type of job I'll be to find when I just start looking (heck I don't even know if I'll be able to find a job because it sucks out there right now)...I know friends that have been looking forever...And although I'm ok right now I will definitely need a job once my unemployment ends...
 
I would take it. Ive been looking for months and hear the same thing everywhere I go that they are not hiring some businesses are not even accepting applications because they have so many already and no positions available. So yea if you have a job offer and no job then I would say defenitely take it!!
 
I would take it. I am lucky enough to live in a country that hasn't been that affected by the current climate, but even here most of the larger, multinational companies aren't employing anyone on a permanent basis, preferring to use short term contractors through companies like manpower. I am on a month to month contract, my boss wants me to have a permanent position, but she is not allowed to give it to me at the moment. So take it! And like everyone else said, keep looking!

And some money is better than no money - the crisis won't last forever, and when times are better you can ask for more money.
 
That is a dilemma... if it were me, I'd take it... at least you know what the companies does, you are familiar with their policies, and you know the people who you are working with, which from experience, is way more important than a good pay check. :glare: And as Lynnette said... this doesn't stop you from looking around.
 
Congratulations on the job offer! If it were me I would take it. But I would ask HR is you could have your past service could be considered for things like vacation and seniority(if it makes a difference to your job). And, if there is a waiting period for retirement benefits, etc, if they could be waived because you are not a 'new' employee. Having those things may make you feel better about taking the position despite the decrease from your former salary level.

Better to be in a job when finding another job. And, who knows, the economy is supposed to pick up and your company may have openings in 6-12 months. Being an internal candidate gives you first dibs in most cases!
 
I think I would take it. I was laid off the end of September (sort of, I was backfilling at the Guard base for full timers who were in Iraq, I knew it was coming, but thought I would be able to get more orders to stay on) and offered 2 new jobs, both paid about half of what I was making before, but they are jobs and better than nothing. So it was tough to decide between the two for me, but I felt lucky that I was even able to have the decision before me.
