Into the Woods

Who's seen it? I'm sure my 11 yr old would like it, but wondering if it would be OK for my 8 yr old?

I'VE SEEN IT!! Because I'm a complete Sondheim freak . . . fanatic . . . super fan, etc. :D

I probably won't let my kids see it for a while, but mine are mostly younger than yours. I don't think there's really anything inappropriate in it . . . it's rated PG. But, some of the themes are darker and maybe a little complicated for a kid to process. For Sean, I know he would ask a kajillion questions trying to understand why so and so did what they did, etc., and I just don't want to bother explaining it all right now. I'll buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out and answer his questions at a later date.

If you're worried about the appropriateness of the content, I think it would be fine for Elisa. She just might not catch all the nuances of the themes.

She's pretty sheltered really. The scariest thing she's seen is Scooby Doo. Haha! I have my nieces staying this week, and need to find a movie they will all enjoy. 12, 11, 9 and 8. The nieces have already seen Big Hero 6, and all that's playing right now is Into the Woods, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Paddington and Penguins of Madagascar.

I think Night at the Museum or Penguins is where we'll end up.

I've heard great things about Paddington and Penguins, so I'm sure you'll all have fun no matter what you decide. :)

I've heard that movie was awful, which makes me sad because I was so excited for it. *shrugs*

Everyone I've heard who didn't like it was expecting a Disney princess movie. That's not what it is. If you know the original musical and love it, you will like the movie. It's about as faithful as movie adaptations get, and they used good singers (thank heavens!).

We didn't like it....I honestly didn't know that it was a full on musical. I wasn't prepared for that. I do like musicals but I didn't feel like this needed to be a musical. The ending for me seemed way abrupt...the movie was slow...I'd choose something else.

We did go watch Annie. It was way cuter!

The movie was fun. Up until the halfway point it made sense... then it took a dark and strange turn. Infidelity was an unexpected theme. Wrong seems right, witches seem good. It takes a preachy vibe. Then ends suddenly and without a real conclusion.

In the end, we regretted bringing the kids to see it. It does have some good moments, so I'd say rent it for yourself sometime.

I didn't think there was anything scary in it, but (with the exception of the Meryl Streep scenes) I was totally bored. I was NOT expecting that because I am HUGE into musicals. It just didn't do it for me.

My 12 year old watched it with her friends over the weekend. They all liked it. They probably enjoyed it more because they went as a group though.

Paddington was cute. Penguins of Madagascar was a little lame. Not as funny as we thought it would be.

I didn't like it much either. Like Carrie, I wasn't prepared for a full-on musical either (had no idea it was a movie adaptation of a broadway musical), and thought it was pretty slow / just ok too.

I LOVE musicals for the most part, but we went into it expecting something similar to Maleficent and were kinda bummed with what it ended up being. I'd go see something else too.

My youngest daughter (12yo) and I went to see it. We both enjoyed it but I would of been happy if they stopped at the halfway mark, but dd said it was good it carried on as it showed not everything was a disney tale. I don't think she really took in the adultery bit, you only see them kissing and singing. The music was catchy and we both like Little Red Riding Hood best. :) I would be ok taking an eight year old to it if I thought she could sit still for two hours.

Penguins was a snore for me & hubby, but Rachel liked it. We all really enjoyed Night at the Museum. I was wondering about Into the Woods so I'm glad to see what you all were thinking about it. I wasn't expecting Disney princess but wasn't sure if it would be scary for my kiddo.

Oh good! Then maybe I will rent it and see it then.

Hmm, I'm second thinking Penguins of Madagascar now too. Don't want to waste that much money if a movie isn't great. Maybe I should just take the kids swimming :)

I didn't think Penguins was nearly as good as the Madagascar movies. Paddington was fine, but I wouldn't rave about it. Too bad your nieces have already seen Big Hero 6, I thought that one was great! Of the choices, my vote would be Night at the Museum but I have not seen it :)

I had friends who saw the musical itself and were unimpressed with the movie. I would give it a pass. We are hoping to see Paddington this weekend.

Haven't seen Into the Woods yet but we have seen Penguins, which was a bit of a snore, and we did see Night at the Museum, which we all really enjoyed (adults and kids ages 15, 14, 12) it was actually really good and we loved the 1st two so wanted to see the final one.

I took my ten year old daughter and I really regretted that choice. There were some parts that I felt were just not age appropriate-she didn't like it (and commented on the scenes that made me uncomfortable/)
