Internet nanny/filter recommendations

Found my 12 yr old viewing inappropriate content on her tablet yesterday. I know I should have had a filter of some kind on there, but she's always been such an innocent, you know? Ugh. Now I need to look into a nanny net type of web filter/monitor. Any recommendations?
 
I have a parental thing through my WiFi router. We use a Netgear router and they have the genie thing that has different options. I can select how locked down I want my internet. Now it does it through the router so it doesn't just lock it done on one particular device, it locks it down for anyone using the WiFi.

This is what we do too for our PC computer/laptop that the kids use. For now, I have it fully "locked down" to content that I have pre-approved. But, when she's in her teens, I'll open it up, on the understanding that she'll need to apply her own judgment and be aware that I get a monitoring report of everything she views. (I also have her email automatically forward to my account and passwords to all accounts that I've allowed her to have.)

For our iPad and our daughter's iPod Touch, I have the web limited to only "approved" web sites -- which meant I had to go in and manually type in each web site that I wanted to allow her access to. If she wants to view another one that is not on the list, she can "request access" through a pop-up menu and then I get a notification on my phone. I can grant/reject access from my iphone.
 
ohhh totally missed that it was a tablet she was using - for some reason i read laptop!

I was wondering about ipods too so this is helpful!
 
What kind of tablet? I know the iPads has a "restrictions" tab in the General settings where you can allow what type of content to come through. I get so irritated with inappropriate/degrading music that it makes me crazy. :cursing:
 
Kindle fire has great parental controls too.

We just got a Circle with Disney, and I'm really happy with what were able to do with it. It only works with devices that are connected to your home network, so it doesn't help when your kids are away from home, but I really like the flexibility it gives us with all the things we use at home.

We have also used the built in Restrictions on the iPad, and those have worked well for us.

I just checked out Circle, and we need something like that, too. Do you need any kind of subscription, or is that a one time charge? I like that it will work with all devices, not just the main Apple and Android platforms. My kids have Kindle Fires, so most things that work via an app probably won't be available for them. It was easier when they were younger and I could restrict things across the board. It's harder now that I want to allow my older 2 some freedom but not have to approve every single website they want to visit.

There's no service. You just buy the device, connect it to your network, and add the devices. You can connect phones, iPads, kindles, laptops, regular computers, Apple TVs, smart TVs . . . anything that's connected to your network. It's pretty cool.

And, yes, it's nice that each member of the family can have a different level of filtering.

Her tablet is an android, not an ipad, but I'll look into some of these options. Thanks!
 
We use something called skydog and we love it! Its a router that can filter any devices on our network and you set up profiles for each family member. Unfortunately it was bought out by Comcast and is getting ruined, BUT it is alot like disney circle.

Another thing we love about it is that we can set schedules. It helps us get chores done and forces some offline time. It's been a god send for our family having 4 kids online.
 
Ugh, Nicholas has a crazy nice Mac laptop. I have no idea how to use it. I'm going to have to figure out soon so I can figure these things out.
 
I couldn't find an app that does for an iPad. I tried a lot of apps, but couldn't find anything that limited views, especially YouTube!
 
So far Webwatcher has not disappointed us - we have 6 kids and use this on the younger 3 (15-8). They are also locked out of websites. I go and check their text messages with this and I can see all the pictures they take as well. I can see any link they tried to access and what they search for.

Some may think that is invasive, I call it responsible parenting :) I have SEEN police show up at my son's HS because a picture had been passed around and the boys involved got arrested for "child porn". That's right. So I believe it is a way for me to protect my children.

This parenting thing is hard work!
